Did Boston Whaler make a Guardian 17 boat? I just looked at a boat ; the owner said [the boat was a Boston Whaler GUARDIAN 17] of unknown year, [perhaps built sometime in the 20 year span of] [1970] to [1989]. Thanks--Tommy

Yes they did. The 17 Guardian that was built of the same hull as the Montauk was in the 1980's.

Correction:
The 17 Guardian that was built of the same hull as the "CLASSIC"Montauk was in the 80's and on until some time after 2000 (?). The 17' Guardian of today is built off the 170 Montauk Hull.

I have only seen one 17'Guardian that was claimed to built off a 17' Outrage I (1990 - 1995). That was only in photos as well. I can find no record of a 17 Guardian built off a 17' Outrage I hull in any brochures. I know the one I am speaking of was owned by Bill Hopper who goes by Nantucket Sleighride here on CW.

I have [a Boston Whaler GUARDIAN 17].

Does this boat you are looking at have the red dot?

Thank you Jeff. gnr, I don't know [if the boat I looked at had a red dot]. I didn't look at it except from several feet away. Is [a Boston Whaler GUARDIAN 17] heavier than a Montauk? Or the same weight? Is it tougher? Thanks

There is some good information in the reference section here.

It is heavier by about 300-lbs, if I remember right. Extra fiberglass and thicker gel. Heavier rub rail. Sometimes more wood depending on the intended application.

The work boats usually had a red or black dot about the size of a quarter inlaid in the gel near the logo a foot or two forward of the transom. Mine actually contradicts some of the info in the reference section.

Information about recreational models molded with heavier laminates and how Boston Whaler visually identified those hulls is provided in the answer to an FAQ. See

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q2

The existence of a particular hull whose appearance does not conform to the usual practices of Boston Whaler notwithstanding, the FAQ describes the generally used techniques of Boston Whaler to differentiate boats built with heavier laminates from standard hulls.

My 1998 17 Alert built up like a Montauk does not have the dot, but I've seen older tan hulls with the red dot. My hull is grey.

I just noticed except for the 22'hull and the 25' hull, all the commercial Whalers are not built on classic hulls anymore!

Glad I found my 18 Outrage last week!
