I have a [1999 Boston Whaler] Outrage 17 powered by a [Mercury] OptiMax 135-HP. I am trying to figure out which [remote engine throttle and shift] controls I have; I can't seem to find out. What controls were used in this model? Thanks

Are you looking for the shift and throttle control? Or the electrical control?

The shift throttle control. More importantly the plastic housing cover and decal

Does your cover say Quicksilver on it?

I have my cover in front of me and it is chrome with a Quicksilver label that is sun-bleached.
The chrome is pitted.

I plan on removing the label, rough it up with some 400 grit paper and spray painting it black.

I let you know how it turns out tomorrow.

I cleaned up the 1999 Quicksilver throttle/shift cover with the sandpaper and spray painted it with semi-flat black.

Wish I had a better before shot, but you get the idea.

By 1999 Boston Whaler was well into its conversion to primarily Mercury power, and there is a good chance your boat was rigged at the factory with its remote throttle and shift controls. Boston Whaler would typically use an OEM control that matched the engine. Since you have a Mercury engine, the controls are likely made by Mercury. Mercury makes several different types of remote throttle and shift controls, ranging in price and quality. It is hard to say with precision exactly what model is on your boat. Mercury has a website where you can get information about replacement parts:

ASIDE to Joe--Your refurbishment of the top-mounted throttle and shift control housing looks great. I like it better than its original appearance with the chrome applique.

Your control is the same one I have, and I have the same problem I am trying to remedy, pitted chrome plastic and missing/ junk decal. I like your idea, did the sand paper file down the problem areas on the plastic? What kind of paint did you use?

I refurbished the top-mounted throttle and shift control housing by first warming the plastic cover over my gas stove just to the point that the Quicksiler decal was loose enough to easily peel off cleanly.

Then using a rubber sanding block and 150 grit sandpaper I "broke the glaze" of the chrome finish. This method leveled any finish imperfections.

I wiped it down with a damp rag, thoughly dried and spray painted it with Krylon indoor - outdoor semi-flat black paint.

30 minutes later I reinstalled it.
