I just read [a for-sale advertisement on Craig's list which claims only three Outrage 22 Cuddy with Super Console boats were built by Boston Whaler]. Do any of you have [a Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 22 Cuddy with Super Console]? Have you seen one? Are these production figures available? Thanks--Chris

--Not that I know of. If any one has a source of reliable information about the number of boats built by Boston Whaler of any model or size, I would be very interested in seeing it.

That number seems low considering how long that model was in production. The main disadvantage of the super console on the Outrage 22 Cuddy is that there is not enough room in front of the console to fit a cooler seat and still be able to open the cuddy doors.

Jim - Chuck Bennett is an excellent source for the number of hulls built information. When I called him for history on my old classic, without even asking he told me, for instance, that 722 Ribside 21 Outrage hulls were built, and that 1435 19' Outrage/Revenge hulls were built.

My guess is that they are willing to give up this information on long discontinued boats, but not with current, or recently discontinued hulls.

When I purchased my 1990 22' Outrage Cuddy with the super console and Whaler Drive a couple of years ago I thought it was a somewhat rare boat. Soon after that I started seeing Outrage Cuddies on a fairly regular basis both on the water and for sale on Craigslist. It's probably best someone actually checks the numbers from the factory.

I have a 1984 22' Outrage with Cuddy, and it has the "regular" console.

I'd have to agree with andygere that, rare or not, having a Super Console would leave very little room for anything else; that Cuddy Cabin is already taking up a lot of space, and I have to admit that there have been many times when I've thought (like others) about removing the Cuddy altogether... but then my wife weighs in.

There's one used as the Fire/Rescue boat in Ephraim, WI. So we're already at those alleged production numbers.

I assume you are referring to [a now expired listing on an on-line advertising website]. I know a couple people with the Super Console and Super Leaning options on 22 Outrage just like the above mentioned Whaler. They claim you lose a great deal of deck space with those options as compared to the standard console and an RPS (or like seating) on a 22 Outrage. I can only imagine how tight that deck is with that console and leaning post in a 22 Outrage Cuddy. If there are low production numbers of those options there is likely a good reason. It was just not practical.

That said, many who believe they have a rarer Whalers (and list is as a key selling feature) often believe it must be worth way more than others. This is not always the case. Condition, condition, condition is the most important driving force in used Whaler values and this one does look very well kept. Though, small images on the internet hide A LOT of sins. Also, the desirability of the model has a great deal to do with value. While a lot of people may be looking for a solid 22 Outrage Cuddy I would venture to say that huge console and leaning post drive a good number of buyers away in favor of more deck space.

The boat has been for sale for a while, I think since last fall, and I know of no one who has look at it in person. I would be interested to know what the condition is in person and how useful the deck space is.

My Whaler dealer in the '80's would display 4 or 5 Outrages of different sizes in his "showroom" with a variety of seating arrangements all of which were "loose". Thus, a prospective buyer could choose what he wanted and custom fit it to the size of his belly. I always thought the same could be done with the consoles but maybe not.

As far as the console placement goes, you're limited by the rigging holes - probably with no more than a few inches leeway.

So in this instance, it's certainly conceivable that you'd have a hard time opening the doors to the Cuddy and climbing in there with a Super Console.

My Outrage Cuddy has very limited on-deck space; many times I have felt I had more room in my Montauk than in the 22 for fishing. It's not difficult to get in and out of the cabin, but it is tight. The cuddy cabin top does make for a nice casting platform when conditions are nice but it's a pain getting up there dealing with an anchor when you are solo and currents are moving. One benefit of the super console: my big Lab likes going inside it to get out of the weather.

I'm still on the fence as far as removing the cuddy. If I had a spare standard console and RPS it would free up a fair amount of space and might sway me to keep the boat stock.

Gotta say, all, that I adore the 'Super Console' on my 1986 20' Outrage.

If nothing else, the storage is exceptional. Small locking tilt drawers on starboard side for keys, wallet, spare sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.

The large doors on the port side allow me to neatly store charts, flares, tool kit, first aid kit, foul weather gear, towels, etc.

Granted, I did extensive cabinetry work using marine plywood to create the partitions....but it was SO worth the effort.

I don't see them too often, but the Super Console is surely worth a premium.

I agree with bkoelbel, I have the supper, and it is well worth the money. Storage is there for props, and tackle boxes . I even keep jackets it here if it gets cold.

I like the super console as well, however because I'm only 5'9", I'm considering removing the electronics box. It's true that the big console eliminates the cooler seat but access to the louvered doors isn't a problem. I'd surmise that the driver usually fishes from the stern so I personally think that the loss of fwd. deck space is worth the increased storage.

The guy that owns the 22' Cuddy in Boston called me yesterday. Nice guy. Says he got the production figures from Boston Whaler. I asked him if he spoke with Chuck Bennett as Larry suggested. He said he made the call a few years ago and didn't remember who he spoke with. I'd like to get Chuck's contact info and follow up, if anyone has it.

More to come.

Chris

I have often thought that I would like to trade my standard console for a super console. It is probably more of a pipe dream than anything else though.

I guess if a super console was close to my location and the owner of the super console wanted to trade for a standard console, I would think much more seriously about the switch. My Outrage 22 is not a cuddy model, so more storage would be a welcome additon.

I have thought about changing my standard console to a super. Crabby, if you are considering a standard console,
I have a nice one on my 22 Cuddy.
What are the outside dimensions of the super?

Super Console from my 1990 22' Outrage Cuddy measures 38" wide x 39" long along the base, and 39" tall in the front.

The Montauk console on my 1985 Montauk measures 33" wide x 27" long x 33" tall.

crbenny for your info. I just sent you an e-mail with my son's outrage 22 cuddy with whaler drive. It has a super console w/ two side storage drawers and lots of storage. Also a leaning post tackle preperation ctr with six drawers, fresh water sink/faucet, 10gal water tank, cooler, four ss rod holders and side tackle storage. The starboard table in rod holders serves dual purpose as bait, fish and snack table. Just enough deck space to function properly because the stern cooler is built in and the cooler in the leaning post is not on the floor. The enclosed storage in the stern is empty with the Suzuki engine having the oil tanks inside the motors. We comfortably fish offshore and travel with two to three on vacation. P.S. not in picture we just added full bimini and fiberglass pulpit. 45kts max 1.44 using a flowmaster at 3200rpm about 30kts thru most sea conditions. Love! the boat.

That sure sounds like a cool boat.

Thanks, my son loves working on her and got carried away. Just installed the Susuki 150 efi's and are still tuning the setup. We run out of the Moriches area both ocean and bay. I like the ride of the cuddy WD combo. The 1989 22'with twins is just enough boat during these $$$ times. At my age the smaller boat (I have a 20" outrage) was tough on my spine.

Thanks Andy we love the boat. She's a father and son hobby over the winter. We are close to finished. The full bimini is being made and will be the last upgrade this year. Now final shakedown and adjustments to floscan, engines and wood refinish. I'm looking forward to the fun time.
