I went with a close friend of mine to pick up his brand new Montauk 150 today at our local Whaler dealer. I also purchased my new 190 in 2008 at the same dealer. I was able to sell my Merc and slap on a new 2010 E-Tec and the dealer knows it.

He asked me how mine was running and I said great my only complaint was that the E-Tec oil is almost 45 bucks a gallon. He than tells me that many E-Tec owners are using Merc's Opti oil which costs $26 dollars a gallon vs $45. I asked him if this would void the warranty and he said no as both oils are syntetic. I'll keep using the E-Tec oil for now but it would be nice to have an option.

No problem with warranty IF YOU SWITCH back to SD-50 setting.

Bu, there is no way I would risk a $5000+ engine using Opti oil instead of XD-100 for $25/gallon

Where are you finding Opti DFI oil @ $26 a gallon?

AN E-TEC engine set for oiling with XD100 must only use XD100 oil. An E-TEC engine set for TCW3 oiling can use any TCW3 oil.

Opti oil is not a fully synthetic lube like Evinrude XD-100 is. It is a synthetic blend similar to XD-50. That is why the price difference compared to XD-100, but is similar to XD-50 cost per gallon.

OptiMax oil is not TC-W3 certified. OptiMax oil has a warning on the bottle that it is not to be used where TC-W3 oil is required.

You can stll use XD100 at this setting if you wish (ie TCW3 or better). I think the "oils" are tested up to 6800rpm to meet TCW3 standards.

I just ran across this the other day while on a local Detroit Area Amsoil Dealer's site.  It is in regards to using Amsoil in E-Tecs in stead of BRP XD-50 / XD-100

My E-TEC dealer sells me XD-100 oil from is bulk drum for about half the price of a prepackaged gallon off his shelf. It was around $25 last week. With XD-100 programing, you will use less oil, and there is no smoke. It's worthwhile.

It seems as though "Merc's Opti Oil" --whatever exactly that is--cannot be used with an E-TEC in any way because:

--if the E-TEC is set for XD100 oil, only XD100 can be used, and clearly "Merc's Opti Oil" is not XD100 oil; and,

--if the E-TEC is set for TCW3 oil, only TCW3 can be used, and "Merc's Opti Oil" is apparently not rated as a TCW3 oil, so again cannot be used.

Therefore, it seems that anyone who tells you that you can use "Merc's Opti Oil" with an E-TEC is giving you advice that is completely contrary to the actual facts. However, this happens all the time among boaters, so you should not be upset at getting bad advice. A lot of what passes for "dock talk" is often completely wrong and bad advice.

Jim I just spoke to my local Evinrude service shop and the tech told me I cannot run just any TC-W3 oil in my ETEC. He said it absolutely must be Evinrude's XD-50 which is their TC-W3. I told him I had purchased a bottle of Pennzoil TC-W3 from West Marine and was keeping it as backup and he said to not use it. I cannot understand why he was so adamant about that. To me it seems as if they oils are the same, right? Is it just a way to sell more Evinrude oil or is there an issue with warranties that I may be missing here?

I'm sorry to say but your "tech" is incorrect. It is a good idea to use at least XD-50 oil but it is not mandatory. At the standard setting an E-TEC can use any make of a TC-W3 certified oil.

Read your owners manual, call Evinrude customer service, or go to www.evinrude.com for the correct info.

E-TEC owers manuals are available online if you can't find yours.

"Dock Talk".....I'm guilty!
After reading jimh's post, I did some research on Optimax Oil.

In fact, it CANNOT BE USED at any oil setting in an E-TEC.
