Our current Outrage 19II and previous boats have used a cover from Cabellas which was relatively light weight but works fine for what we do when the boat is sitting on the trailer to keep leaves and water out of the boat. The cover was getting a bit tired but still working until last week when a small tree limb went through it in a storm so it now needs to be replaced. Unfortunately Cabelas has a ridiculously long lead time on the backordered cover for my boat so I was wondering if anyone knew of a good source for a similar cover. Mils covers are nice but honestly heavier more costly than I need. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Have a look at Carver Covers. Discount Covers sells them as do others but I've had good service and pricing from them at discountboatcover.com for a starting point.Butch |

I've had good service from pre-made covers from Taylor-Made. The West Marine catalog has photos of a great many types of boats with covers designed for each. The Mills cover I had for my Montauk was in another league entirely but I have now a Taylor-Made for my T-topped 200 Dauntless to keep the leaves and rain out and I feel it is a good value for it's price. I use a custom made towing cover - made of my favorite material - herculite - a vinyl impregnated nylon mesh. Herculite is virtually indestructable (doesn't burn, rot, midlew, tear, rip, et al.) and is totally waterproof. Herculite is the only material certified for naval gun covers - as I have read/heard.It has been many years since I had the cover made for my '96 17 Outrage - but as I recall it was between $300 and $400. I could, but don't leave it on over the winter - and change to a less expensive, similar material that the farmers use for irrigation diversion dams. Does the same job but it is much less expensive. ---- Jerry/Idaho |

Jerry -- Herculite is the name of a comapany that manufactures several dozen different fabrics. Which one did you use? |

Tom - I thank you for the clarification - and you or someone else had made the same correction some time ago - but my old brain didn't pick up on it.There are several "Herculite" fabrics - (Google "Herculite fabrics") - and it has been a long time (10 years or so) since I had my cover made, that I don't remember the weight - but probably 6.5 or 10 oz - but that is just a wag. They make some with polyester - but as I recall, the fabric I used was with nylon - but either should be alright for a boat cover. But truely - this material is IT! I have used it for back packs (some 30 or so for a cub/boy scout project some 45 years ago), floor on my hunting tent (though the floor may be of at least 10 oz), panniers (bags hung on saddles when packing with horses or mules), the boat cover - and there will be more. ---- Jerry/Idaho |
