I purchased a [1990 REVENGE 22 W-T with Whaler Drive] last spring. I just discovered a hole in the deck in the storage compartment behind the Captain's chair. It is approximately 1-1/4-inch in diameter. It is angled, not perpendicular to the deck, and the edges are perfectly clean like it was factory made. The hole was covered by a piece of wood in the storage box so I never saw it.

Does anyone know why the hole would be there? Is it supposed to be there? Should I close the hole? Unfortunately, I do not know the history of the boat.

Thank you,

Paul

My 22' 1990 Revenge does not have any storage compartments in the area you describe. I could be wrong, but I don't think Whaler offered anything for storage in that area. Does the hole line up over the top of the rigging tunnel below? A photo would be helpful if you have one.

Paul -

I've got a 1990 Revenge 22 W.T. and don't recognize what you are describing.

Is it in the bait well at the aft end of the cockpit? Directly behind/below the helm seat?

On the older Revenge, one of the options was helm and passenger seats mounted to a storage unit with drawers and doors. Maybe it's a drain out of one of those to the rigging tunnel.

John,

Because storage is at such a premium, those storage units/helm seat platforms sound like a fantastic idea.

Would love to get my hands on a pair of those original Whaler units.

Is it possible that a previous owner rigged a livewell/baitwell in this storage space? That would be an access for drainage and/or electrical connections for pumps.

I have a similar hole in my deck through which is routed a plastic tube, that allows wiring access into the cavity in the cuddy. It allows wires to route down for the cuddy cabin lights and the bilge pump in that cavity, as well as a separate bilge exhaust tube to evacuate water from the cavity into the rigging tunnel and therefore, to the sump. I don't know if that is OEM or not, either.

The Revenge Walk Through models had the option of Super Pilot Seat/Workstations which came in several different flavors including a sink in one form of it and a live well in another.

I suspect this hole in question is an artifact of one of these Super Pilot Seats.

See page 15 of the 1987 Boston Whaler Options Catalog for more information.

As always... Great info Tom. I wonder how many owners splurged for the Super Pilot seats?

Tom,

I think the optional sets you speak of can be seen here in Pat's photobucket page. These are not of his boat but a local one he inspected for another member.

Thank you all for your help.

The storage compartments are exactly like the storage compartment shown in the photobucket. On closer examination, the hole opens into the rigging tunnel and it is angle toward the stern.

I have not been able to get photos of the hole as of yet.

The question is, should I patch the hole or should I leave it open? I have no use for the hole and I am worried about water rotting the plywood or allowing water to get into the rigging tunnel. Does water in the rigging tunnel get to the bilge pump?

Thank you again,

Paul

Just my opinion, I think those compartments were designed to be used as coolers, live wells, and drainage was necessary, I would think that they drain to the rigging tunnel and then to the sump, and out from there.

As far as plugging them, I wouldn't do it personally, because I think where the compartments are at and the type lid they have there will always be the possibility of water getting into them, and no where to go if plugged, then you'd have to remove everything in there, dry it, and sponge the water out.

Are you keeping the storage compartments? If not, I may be interested in buying them from you.
