Here are the pics and videos I took of the Manhattan circumnavigation on Saturday June 26. We had 23 boats participating. I was solo in my Dauntless 14.

My new camera has built in GPS which I thought I would never use. Picasa shows the trip progress on the map insert as you view the pics, pretty cool. Enjoy.....

Thanks for sharing the pics Dave. They came out great. We were quite impressed with the performance of your 14 on the Hudson. She seemed to move really quickly among the group.

It was my pleasure. If anyone wants to have a pic in native resolution just e.mail me and let me know.

I learned that the map feature doesn't show in "slide show" mode. After opening the link just click on the first pic and it will expand. Advance pics by using the arrow above the pic. On the third slide in the camera GPS got sync'd up with the satellites and you will see the map adjacent and to the right of the pic. You can zoom the map with the "+" and "-" key.

Enjoy.

You can also e.mail me with names or points of interest and I will add them to the photo title in picasa.

Dave,

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I have to agree with Scott, that 14 Dauntless of yours rode like a much bigger boat. It was really an eye opener. What a great, easy to tow, easy to handle small hull.

Here are my pics, also posted in the Rendez-Vous section.

What a sweet trip. I was concerned about your rendezvous because of the unsettled weather in Connecticut, but it looks like you caught a great day for a cruise.

Brings back great memories. I spent half-a-dozen years working in NYC and environs back in the 'seventies. In fact, the first time I ever stepped foot in a Whaler was way back then, in City Island, where a friend of mine kept an old blue smirkless 16. We fished the Sound for blues, and I immediately fell in love with the little skiffs, even though I wouldn't own one myself for another 25 years.

Next year for me and my wife as ride-alongs, guys, if any of you will have us. Thanks, Dave.

IrishCreamer,

Thanks. The photographs were taken with a Nikon D40, with the standard lense kit. I need to get a zoom lense.

If you would like any of the photos in their native resolution, just let me know, as photobucket crops them down to fit an 800 x 600 resolution screen.

IrishCreamer,

Dave looks to have a Sony DSC-HX5V.

The Sony DSC cameras take great pictures and videos.

The GPS feature is great for trips like this.

Great pictures, I wish I was able to make it. Perhaps next year.

Dan has my camera right, a SONY DSC-HX5V that is a new model this year. It has too many modes to explain here but I went with it mainly for the 10X zoom, pro quality optics and HD video capability (the videos I posted were also shot with it). Here is the link:

I used to carry around a camera bag full of lenses, now I only use this small footprint camera and I take a lot more pics.

Thanks for the kind remarks on the Dauntless 14. She handles waves well and on the light conditions heading South on the Hudson I was comfortable at WOT and 45 mph. I am used to getting pounded on my home waters of Upstate NY's finger lakes and Oneida Lake. To bad this hull was only built in 1999 and 2000.

Here is the correct link for the SONY DSC-HX5V camera. The first one will get you there but shows another model first.

Wow! Having been stationed on Governors Island for 18 or so months, from roughly mid 1970 through 1972, I can only imagine how cool it would be to circumnavigate Manahattan. So many folks who visit NYC forget that it's beginnings were absolutly rooted in the marine enviornment and ignore the water tours. If ever I get back up that way maybe I can beg a ride from a fellow Whaler owner.

Thanks, guys. Looking for a small camera with video capabilities for my boat. Already zeroed in on the HX5v and deciding between this and the Panasonic equivalent (little blue has this).

Dave - Any issues with the camera thus far? Seems pretty sweet although some of the images are soft and the wind noise is loud. The Panasonic seems sharper but has vertical white outs in direct light.
