I've had my 1985 Sport 13 for fifteen months now, and first started fishing in earnest last fall here in southern California, (IOW, year round).

One of the things that makes my boat feel "small", especially when fishing with a buddy is rods everywhere, (4 total, 2 each).

My boat has side rails only, no bow rails. It would be nice to have something that would secure the rods out of the way while under way, and maybe something where I could prop up one rod while fishing the other.

This may belong in the "mods" area, but then again, I may just be asking about a brand recommendation.

Buy yourself a milk crate. About $10 at Office D. or $20 at W..marine. Then get yourself 4 loose plastic rod holders and some h/d zip ties. Fasten the rod holders inside each of the 4 corners of the crate. Total, about $25. Plus you have a place to store a tackle bag, hang a coffee cup, etc. You can move it around to keep it out of your way.

...or you could get some decent clamp on rod holders for the railings for about $120.

Peter,

I've had excellent service from West Marine stainless steel rod holders mounted to the side rails of my Whalers. I mount them inside because I cover my boat when it's not in use. If you can safely mount them outside the rails it will save you a little space for moving around in your Sport.

The rod holders are almost infinitely adjustable for angle so you can get them set up just as you wish. An allen wrench is all that is required.

They seem to be on sale every couple of months.

Surprisingly the Perko twins to the West Marine holders did not hold up as well in salt water.

A note about clamp-on rod holders: clamp them to a vertical member, as they can loosen on a horizontal member and dump your trolling rig into the deep forever. Don't ask me how I know this.

Looks like the Lee's holders are "da bomb". Thanks for the leads, guys.

You know, when I bought my classic Sport 13 fifteen months ago, the previous owner had been quite a fisherman. But the first thing I did was remove all his fishing gear, sonar, rod holders, pedestal fishing seat on the bow locker cover. Because I was not a fisherman. I have since re-installed the fishing seat and the sonar. I had forgotten about the rod holders. They are Attwoods, with the name of someone, Robert something or other, but they are surprisingly high quality, with all stainless hardware. Certainly not bad for the price, free. At the very least, I will be able to get an idea of what I want in the way of rod organization.
