I recently went on a tuna trip out of Ocean City Maryland, we headed to the Norfolk Canyon about 90 minutes out, and on the ride out I was shocked to see how many single engine boats were so many miles out. How far out have some of you guys went? |

I have been 40+ miles past the Grays Harbor buoy off the coast of Washington state halibut fishing at Grays Canyon. My 1989 Outrage 22 (1992 Suzuki 200) does not really have the fuel capacity for this trip. The next time I travel out there, I will have a couple 6 gallon cans of back up gas with me. Doug Vazquez |

In addition to the right boat, motor, and safety equipment, a little boating experience would be helpful, and a stay sober too. http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/article987524.ece rich/Binkie |

Ocean - 25-30 miles in Montauk 17 with Mercury 60 four stroke. Lake Erie - 13-15 miles Pick your days and "don't outpunt your coverage" (sea conditions, forecast, boat limitations, and your experience level). |

I've been out about 7-8 miles in my 1991 17' Outrage. If things go to plan, I'll be heading out a little farther to the Mudhole in search of some tuna next week. Should be fun. |

Most important is the weather, do a planned trip so some one on shore knows were and how long you will be. Best things to have on the boat is an eprib and satellite phone. When I was young I would wait for good weather and shoot across Fla Straights to Bimini in my 16'7'' (53 miles one way) I have only done this twice in the whaler. Its very seldom I leave sight of land now because of the fishing in South Fla is closer to shore than up north. I also use the boat to shoot across Fla Bay to go to Flamingo from Tavernier Fla. (23 miles across the bay)... To each his own |

Run 60-80Miles off montauk 4-6 times a year. My longest run was 110 and drifted out to 120 while fishing. My biggest fear is fire with 170 gallons of hightest in boat (with 130 gallons on deck) Preparation prep prep. |

15-30 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico out of Destin, FL or Orange Beach, AL depending on what I'm fishing. Always on the correct weather day, which brings out a multitude of vessels within VHF hailing range. Last year, we got into a "wagon-wheel", trolling over a WWII wreck with several other vessels. My Outrage 18, a 45 Viking, 35 Luhrs and several other various large size Sportfishing boats. Coming back to harbor, we rode along with the Viking for 20 miles back to the pass. That night at a restaurant, the skipper of the Viking recognized me and we spoke at length about the "little" Whaler out there with the big boys. |

40+ miles off the Texas Coast. Total trip was 130 miles. Used a little less than 40 gallons of gas. Figure about 60 is the max range for the 22 Outrage. Of course preparation (EPIRB, float plan, safety gear, etc.) and picking the weather are vital to success. Go for it! |

I have a Dauntless 180 with a single Optimax 135. I have been more than 40 miles offshore in the Great Lakes, which is about as far offshore as you can get in the Great Lakes. The trips that took me the farthest offshore were: 1. Grand Haven, Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and back - about 83 miles each way, 40+ miles offshore on Lake Michigan. 2. Copper Harbor, Michigan to Isle Royale, Michigan and back - about 55 miles going there and about 75 miles coming back, 25+ miles offshore on Lake Superior. 3. Frankfort, Michigan to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and back - about 55 miles each way, 25+ miles offshore on Lake Michigan. |
