This West coast fog is driving me crazy--haven't been able to get out to fish in a long time. I'm all gassed up and ready to go, but don't have a small radar on board, so no where to go! Mark

I live in "the SB" like you do. You must go out pretty far. I fish around the moored boats at East Beach, up and down the kelp growing out of the rock piled up over the city sewer line, and a little bit off the harbor breakwater and the kelp, (at least there was kelp last year), that lies between the breakwater and Leadbetter Beach. And I've done it in heavy fog, too. It's not so bad as long as you know the area and keep things you know close to you and in sight... like the moored boats off East Beach, which are close enough together that you aren't out of sight of at least one of them. Still I haven't noticed it to be _that_ bad. I live near enough that I can hear the fog horn, and it hasn't been blowing every minute of every day. The fog seems to roll in, then back of again throughout the day.

Peter I also heard some kayakers catching flaties around the break water, but I was trying to get out to Santa Cruz island hoping for the back side. The seas have been calm enough except for the fog! I tried two week ago but just didn't like it. Mark ( 1988 montauk 17 )

Foghorn's blowing right now. I'm lying in bed, being lazy, and I can hear them through the open window...

...oh, wait... no kidding... just as I'm typing this, it's frequency of "toots" is diminishing. It's gone from one every 2-5 seconds, to once every 30s- 1 min.

Crazy weather here in socal right now. While most of the inland areas are in a heat wave, the coastal area is cooler than normal.

Lemme know when/if you're launching today. Maybe I'll walk down there and say hi.

Do you have a white Dodge diesel towing a non-smirked center console with an older two stroke 70 OMC with a HUGE amount of setback and black bottom paint?

second paragraph: http://diver.net/bbs/posts002/82568.shtml ?

Monterey was nice and sunny yesterday. Finally.

Not me,I wouldn't cross the shipping lanes without a radar in that fog! Nice article on Santa Rosa and the channel. Chuck do you get down here much? I was raised in Pacific Grove and loved the ocean up there! mark

I get down south about once a year on one of the bunk room
live-aboard dive boats out of Santa Barbara.

Chuck would that be Truth Aqautics? I know Glen the owner at the Sea Landing. How far out of Monterey to you dive with your montauk , is Point Lobos close enough? Mark

Sometimes Truth Aquatics, sometimes Peace. We were on Vision
this last time.

I've had the Montauk out to the far NW end of the Farallones,
and south of Pt. Sur, but that takes some special planning.

We get to Pt. Lobos pretty regularly, but usually by launching
there.

Chuck do you launch at Whalers Cove?

We launch at Whaler's Cove pretty regularly, tides permitting.
When we launch there, we usually dive there.

Note for fishers: Pt. Lobos State Natural Reserve should not
be confused with Pt. Lobos State Marine Reserve.

The Natural Reserve has been around for many years, is
smaller than the the Marine Reserve, is administered by
Calif. Dept. of Parks and Recreation, and does not allow
possession of hunting and fishing gear. So you can't launch
at Lobos and go fishing.

The Marine Reserve is a couple of years old, is
administered by DFG, and you can transit with fishing gear
if not deployed in the water. No take.

Chuck good info to know. I was thinking of launching from Monterey and cruising the old coast line just wasn't sure how difficult it was from Point Joe (asilomar) to Point Lobos? Did it once along time ago, got a playful attack from small pod of killer whales or dahl porpoises,a little scary I must admit, with my dad left our boat at whalers cove that night. Always wanted to try it again.
