A buddy of mine said he heard that Boston Whaler may be unveiling a [new boat] at the Miami Boat Show this year. Anyone heard this rumor?

With emergence of the Miami International Boat Show (MIBS) as the premiere boat show in all of the Americas, it is now quite normal that new model introductions from boat builders take place there. Boston Whaler has made a habit of introducing new models at the MIBS for several years. I have not heard anything specific for the 2011 MIBS from Boston Whaler.

It is really just a matter of priorities as to whether someone can afford one.

They should make a deckboat.

Yes, the priority of having a LARGE bank account...
Where is THAT stimulous plan??
I hope it's a "new" classic 15', I'd buy the first one.

The only thing really missing from their current product line-up is a family of dual console boats. If we're making guesses, I'll guess a new line-up of dual console boats to replace the Ventura series.

It could be the new 170 Supersport or has that been unveiled already?

Actually the boat Whaler needs to build is a bay boat. Something that will compete with the Bay Ranger/Skeeter/Dorado/Pathfinder etc.

These boats are all the rage the past few years and Whaler doesn't really make a serious fishing boat.

Bring back the classic Montauk as a bay/flats boat. I could take mine into 9 inches of water under the keel.

The problem is that people are spending big bucks on 24ft bay boats with big outboards on the back. I'm surprised that Brunswick/Mercury hasn't forced Whaler to offer a true bay boat as they all seem to have at least a 225 on the back.

Think small.
Maybe it's a new 9 footer!

Maybe a rib boat to get back the commercial market.

Whats the difference between the Dauntless and a "True Bay Boat"?

Before I purchased my Classic Montauk I considered spending much more on a 2004+ 18 Dauntless and also looked at other bay boats.

Spec wise the Dauntless is pretty much identical to other modern bay boats(12" draft, up to 23-24ft in length, up to 250hp). I guess the Dauntless has more Family frendily features while most bay boats are more fish oriented.

It's funny because classic Whalers have lest draft most modern bay boats (9inches Montauk, 10 inches Outrage). Which was something that swayed me to a classic Whaler, as I go in some shallow water, but didn't want a flats boat like a Carolina skiff.

A "Bay" boat needs more than one livewell, and jack plate/porta bracket, trolling motor plenty of rod storage and flat decks to walk around on.

The Dauntless is too family oriented.

Probably that overpriced 345 with a tower and windshield mods.

I think it's a 220 outrage hull, made into a better dual console with a updated interior, better seats than the older version. That general hull works for family because of the walk out rear transom door and a front open bow area with good seating for kids that already exists.

Add a great wake board tower with some pole holders welded on, some fishing options and it would be the ultimate unsinkable family recreational boat.

Given the price range of the wake board boats, its actually in the ball park.

Give it the max hp option of 300hp like the 220 OR and that would be interesting. Some nice gelcoat graphics, a new look, it would finally be a Whaler than you could talk your wife into.

My 190 Montauk with a 135 Verado engine was bought for bay fishing. So far, it has served the purpose perfectly, or almost so. A little more rod storage wouldn't hurt but we have a lot of flat deck area. The live bait well is excellent and a second one would be an unnecessary addition.

As said, the only thing I would hope for is additional rod holders. So far I've added two to the rear rails and may add more. This provides storage for eight rods when nine would be ideal and a couple of extras would do no harm.

The boat draws 12 inches + or - with the engine up. I expect to add a trolling motor after Christmas to enhance the shallow water performance.

The Montauk replaced a 160 Dauntless which served us well in the bay but not as well as the Montauk.

A 210 or even a 240 Montauk with a 250 or so Verado would make an excellent bay boat and would be good for a professional guide with sufficient seating and rod and tackle storage. It would probably fish four in comfort with a guide at the helm.
