I am looking to replace my 2000 F150 4WD truck with a 2006 Volkswagen Touareg. It will be used as a daily driver as well as a tow vehicle for my 190 Outrage.

The VW has a 3.2 litre V6, automatic transmission and a 7700 lb tow rating.

Has anyone here towed with a Volkswagen Touareg?

I suggest that you do a local search using "porsche cayenne" as the search string. There have been several discussions in this forum.

I read that thread:

A lot of posts but not a lot of first hand information regarding the vehicle being discussed.

That 7700 lb tow rating seems quite optimistic. As a comparison, my Tahoe with a 5.3L V8 and a 3.42:1 rear axle has the same tow rating.

With that said, I don't think it would have any problem towing the 190 Outrage (probably not more than 3500 lbs) and will be a much better daily driver than the F150.

You might want to ask your general question at www.vwvortex.com.

Thanks for the link Peter. I too think the 7700 lb. tow rating is a little optimistic but the Touareg weighs more than 5,000 lbs, has huge brake rotors, has 240 HP and 225 ft. lbs. of torque so it should be okay.

Carson,

Have you considered getting the diesel version? I'm very happy with my much smaller turbo diesel Jetta Sportwagen. I've got 20,000 miles on the thing since I bought it last year -- fun to drive, torque-y, and absolutely great fuel economy (~38 mph combined city/highway). I don't tow with mine, however, though I'm sure it would handle my classic Montauk without much problem. You'll have no problem towing your sweet OR 190 around Oahu with that big, powerful Touareg, whichever motor you choose.

Tony, I'd prefer the diesel version but they are hard to find here. maybe I'll keep looking.

I have a 2004 Touareg V-10 TDI. You should have no trouble towing a 19' Outrage with your V-6. It has all the right stuff. Brakes, suspension, steering, transmission, etc. It may be a tad slow on acceleration but thats okay. Don't let the WV logo hold you back. All in all, it's a great package.

One of my car racer buddies tows his race rig:
2900 lb car
500lbs worth of spare wheels, tires, tools
on a heavy, double-axle steel trailer

Probably 5000lbs total, with a Touareg. He was/is a Ford nut. All his life, (he's in his mid-40's now), he had had three-quarter or one-ton pickups and used them for towing his race rig. Then he got laid off, (he's an engineer specializing in embedded software systems), and couldn't afford a $50,000 truck for himself and something nice for his wife. So, he got a used Touareg for the both of them to share... and he tows his race rig with it. That was nearly 3 years ago. He has long since gotten a new job. He could easily afford a new Ford pickup again... but guess what? You will have to pry his Touareg from his cold, dead fingers. And he's a very classic, calculating engineer-type. His reasons for keeping the Touareg go beyond the fact that it so very much nicer to drive than a truck. I can put you in touch with him, if you want to hear from the horse's mouth. He's a great guy. You will be impressed by how smart he is.

Thanks for the responses. I passed on the 3.2 litre V6 but have my eye on a 2005 Touareg with the Audi 4.2 litre V8 with 310 HP. It will burn a little more gas but I don't have a long drive to and from work and my boat is kept at a marina less than 5 miles away.

I can vouch for the Q7 TDI diesel. I tow my car all over the midwest and get 21+ mpg pulling the trailer. 28+ mpg without the trailer. I would have no problem dragging my Dauntless to the lake.

Well I purchased a 2006 Touareg with a V8 and it tows my Whaler without any trouble. An excellent everyday driver too.
