I wonder if it plays ominous music instead of a foghorn.

quote:

Here's a mystery that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ``piano bar.''

A grand piano recently appeared on a sandbar in Biscayne Bay, about 200 yards from the Quayside condominiums off Northeast 107th Street. Whoever put it there placed it at the highest point of the sandbar so that it's not underwater during high tide.

How and why the piano got there is a mystery. A grand piano weighs at least 650 pounds and is unwieldly to move, said Bob Shapiro, a salesman at Piano Music Center in Pembroke Park. ``You don't take it out there in a rowboat,'' Shapiro said.

This much is clear, however: The piano isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Unless it becomes a danger to wildlife or boaters, authorities have no plans to haul it away.

``We are not responsible for removing such items,'' said Jorge Pino, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. ``Even a car can become a habitat for wildlife. Unless the item becomes a navigational hazard, the Coast Guard would not get involved.''

The marine patrols of both the North Miami Police Department and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the same thing.

From Quayside, the shape of the piano is visible to the naked eye, but with a pair of binoculars or a telephoto lense, seagulls can be seen landing on the instrument and water lapping at its legs.

Throwing away a grand piano may seem like a waste of money, but it may not be. In decent condition, a used grand piano would cost at least $3,000 to $4,000. But many pianos wear out from the literally tons of pressure on the internal parts. Cheaper models aren't worth the cost of rebuilding.

``It could be worth nothing,'' Shapiro said. ``Pianos don't grow old gracefully. They just wear out.''

Miami Herald staff writer Scott Andron contributed to this report.

Maybe one of the mega yachts that are popular in the South Florida area gently ran aground on the sandbar. Offloading the heavy grand piano was enough to provide enough flotation to free the yacht from the sand bar.
Not only is it a sandbar, it is now a "Piano Bar" (rim shot).

Where I do a lot of my boating (Midcoast Maine) my favorite daymark is in the South Bristol Gut - it's a recliner (yes, a chair) mounted on a post on a reef. The local story is that it belonged to a long-lived citizen who spent much time in the chair, so they mounted it to the reef "in memoriam." I'm not sure it's a true story, but it's a nice one.

Anyone else have non-standard navaids in their area?

Pointe Au Baril, Ontario has a barrel on a post.

I believe there are a few photos of this unconventional nav aid in Cetecea.

There is also a small harbor in that region called Indian Harbor that has an Inukshuk giving boaters the "thumbs up" sign.

The pilings marking the channel from the Samish River into Samish Bay have pilfered road signs on them.

The arrows point to what side of the piling to travel on.

Latest "news" is that the local authorities asked the piano planters to remove the "instrument of navigational confusion."
..
It has since been replaced with a table, chairs & a
free standing waiter.....although the service seems to be a little slow.

Rock Harbor on Cape Cod has road signs to mark the channel as well. The reflective coating on the signs make them easy to see with a spotlight when returning to port after dark.

There is a place in the Keys (Tavernier about Mile Marker 90 Bay Side) that uses toilet seats for markers for the channel...Called the Toilet Bowl
