Read an article about Bundy outboards in the recent Antique Outboarder. Back in 1961 During the Orange Bowl Nine Hour Regatta at Miami Marine Stadium a 13ft. Whaler powered by a Bundy 500 (30hp) Outboard won first place in its division. The Bundy powered Whaler traveled 228 miles averaging 25.33 miles per hour. No mention of how many fuel stops were made. This may be Whalers only entry into boat racing. I Googled this info. and found an ad by Bundy Outboards featuring this advent. No mention of Boston Whaler but the picture clearly shows it is a center steered 13` Whaler. The picture is an enlarged picture from an E-Bay auction (not mine) for this advertisement.

228 miles averaging 25.33 miles per hour! In a 13 whaler that is painfull! That guy is still feeling it. Great advertisement, thanks for posting it. |

The boat is not a Center Steered model, but a modified Sports Model. It appears the helm was mounted in the middle of the forward thwart seat and a wooden gauge panel was constructed for, perhaps, a speedometer and tachometer. The Center Steer Sport 13 model would not appear for another ten years. |

The Orange Bowl Regatta, 1961? Was that the race in Clambake with Elvis as Scott Hayward? I believe Scott won that race, that super glue he invented held up and saved the day. |
