I have the opportunity to buy what is being called a 18' Marine Whaler. I've searched high and low for more information about this hull. Here's the original ad for the boat when it went up for sale over a year ago:
############################################################
18' center console ex navy boat - $9000 (hawaii kai)
Date: 2009-12-27, 9:49PM HST

18' center console built by boston whaler for the navy. deeper and wider than a boston whaler montulk

Suzuki 40 hp 4 stroke with tilt. only 70 hrs run time just serviced by Central Marine. (change oil, oil filter, gear oil, water pump assembly, spark plugs)

2-marine batteries with battery selector switch

1- 20 gal and 1 10 gal gas tanks
##################################################

That boat is now up for sale and I am considering it. Motor was changed out to a rebuilt 2-stroke 110 hp Evirude.

The new seller emailed me with this about the boat hull itself:
#######################################################
The is very solid with no soft spots, and the entire hull has been gel coated for protection. It does have a few chips in the paint but nothing major, pretty much cosmetic and simple to fix. That would be the only thing wrong with the hull is, the chips and when the guy painted the boat he painted it outside and it made small bubbles in the paint coat when it dried. But once again its just the paint not the gel coat or the hull its self. The boat has an older deeper navy style hull. It is not like your typical montauk with the shallow low rails, as soon as you step foot into the boat you will see the difference. . There is a lot of deck space and a boat that is ready to be customized to your liking. There is a hatch storage compartment on the bow I use for the anchor line but it can be removed from the boat if you would like to change the layout, without jacking up the deck. (which I thought was a major plus) There is also a center console with all your instruments that also can be removed simply if you prefered to change the lay out. The center console looks a little weathered with wear and tear but it works fine. There is also a custom storage bench type seat that can be taken in or out the boat without a problem. I usually put it in when taking out the family and out for diving/fishing adventures. There are two batteries with a select switch to run one, two, or both. There is a 600gpm bilge pump but you can change it out to a larger one if you please very easily (I could even help you do it). I think 600 is enough. I mean it is a Whaler...Right!!! hahaha...There are three shot guns for trolling.
###########################################################

He did call it a 17 footer instead of a 18 footer though so I'm not sure what's up with that. What do you guys know/think?

Good boat?

It is probably a Raider Landing Craft but it could also be a military Guardian. Both use the same exterior hull mold as the classic Outrage 18.

Maybe a Red Dot Whaler?

I suspect that "Marine" refers to the original owner of the boat, the U.S. Marines. I would look that one over carefully. Most of these ex-military Whalers have taken a beating, and I'd be worried that the poor paint job is hiding some potentially shoddy repairs. Also, $9k sounds like a lot of money for one of these with marginal power on it.

I'm in Hawaii and boats here fetch much more than the boats do on the mainland. Some current examples on craigslist right now:
2003 17 Montauk with 90hp Merc 4-stroke motor and no extras: $19,000
Older 17' Montauk with 40hp Suzuki 40stroke, fish finder, 150 quart cooler and bimini top: $14,500
2008 13' Sport with 40hp Merc, cushioned seats and a dive ladder: $11,000
22' older basic Outrage with no motor, lowered to $17,000
Older 17' Montauk with an unknown 2-stroke motor, gps/sonar, vhf, stero and "a lot of extras": $15,000
1971 17' Montauk with 90hp Evirude e-tech, command bridge, two fuel tanks, dual batteries, gps, radio and a fish box: $19,000
2006 17' Montauk with 90 hp Merc 4-stroke, anchor, safety equipment and extras. 2nd owner. $23,000

Welcome to my world. I've been watching the price discussions on this forum for a little over a year now and chuckle when some of you guys whine about the prices you are dealing with...

Lemme try to find an Outrage just for laughs. Those are in much higher demand here... Only one available right now. Unknown year, 15 ft with twin 4-stroke johnsons, and a tandem trailer. $50,000

Back to the subject at hand... I asked for pictures and am still waiting for those. I remember seeing pictures a while ago when this one first went up for sale and I remember it being yellow. That's all I remember and have to go by currently.

Hmm, can't edit previous post. 15 ft Outrage for 50k should have said 25 ft... Doh.

Did some quick reading up... This boat supposedly measures just under 18 ft so I don't think it's a Raider as those measure slightly over 18 ft and I think the same hull was used for the 19' Outrage or some such.
