I am continuing my search for an [OUTRAGE 18] and I would appreciate it if there is someone in the Naperville area (Illinois) that could look over a boat for me. The boat in question is actually a 1982 Newport 18, but it has the same hull as the [Outrage]. I am going to use it to ferry the family around [Long Island Sound], not for serious fishing, so the Newport is fine for my purposes. From reading on this site I have become very concerned about water intrusion into the foam of these older boats. This particular boat has been kept on a trailer and has no bottom paint so, assuming it has been covered adequately, there should be no problem with water in the foam. I guess some intrusion could come from water collecting under the deck. I am not sure if this is a concern. The boat is not a great deal for me. There will be several large expenses in addition to the cost of the boat. I will have to pay to transport it to New York, the trailer is painted, so it won’t last long in the saltwater, and the engine is nearly 30 years old. I would like to restore an [Outrage] to very good condition so I am hoping that the hull, at least, is in outstanding condition. Most of the boats that I have looked at on the East coast have spent a long time in the sun and water and represent a considerable challenge to restore. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

Most of the time since I've been watching this forum someone would jump on this to help you out. Must be no one in the area or close enough to check out the boat. Good luck. |

Here is a link to the boat in question. http://www.waterwerks.com/new_galleria.asp?pov=2180746 I tried to get a professional survey for the last boat I looked at but no one seemed interested. Instead several people from the forum offered to go. Many people here probably know more about potential problems with these boats than a professional anyway so I thought I would ask here first. Let me know what you think. On a closer look there seems to be some odd modifications, particularly all the screws in the anchor well cover. |

Water intrusion is a concern, but I don't think is endemic to all older Boston Whaler boats. I believe the great majority of older Boston Whaler boats do not have any serious problems with water intrusion. It is atypical to find a boat with badly water-saturated foam in its Unibond hull, but it is prudent to be aware that it can occur. |

Based on the pictures, if the motor runs, that's a pretty good price for a fairly uncommon model.I would not be concerned with water intrusion with this boat. It has clearly been trailered its entire life. Looks like a good deal to me. It has some canvas and looks to have the forward shelter as well. Dan |

Water Works appears to be way SE of Naperville, more like the Tinley Park area. There is a Whaler dealer in Chicago you could ask to do servey. I'm going down to Darien, IL but the Newport would be a bit out of my way. Like about 20mi. The photos of the Newport look good. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1982-Boston-Whaler-Newport-18-98833686 Tom from Rubicon, WI |

I lied. Waterwerks 3s450 N State Rte 59 Naperville, IL 60563 (630) 393-0100 I know exactly where it is at, the intersection of Butterfield Rd.(Rt.56) and Hwy.Rt. 59. I might be able to look at it next weekend but at the price they are asking I doubt it will be there. If I had the spare cash I would snag it myself. That boat is a trailer queen with some very desirable accessories. Tom |

That's a neat boat, never looked at one this close before. If it were to be used in fresh water only and the engines ran well it would be a pretty good deal. I would be wanting a galvanized or aluminum trailer and newer engine. Is the fuel tank in good shape? I can picture raising the console and the seat like many have done with their Montauks and Outrages. Good luck, Rick |
