As we approach this 4th of July weekend, no doubt many of us are going to be out in our boats.

I'm sure all of us at one time or another have had the opportunity to witness first hand, the meaning behind the phrase: "A boat does not a captain make".

I'll bet you guys have some stories to share here on this thread about what you have seen, would surely make for some interesting reading.

We get alot of "lake boaters" from the inland part of the state (NC) on the ICW, renting beach houses. They're always good for a few laughs, and thats even before they start drinking. My favorite, (and I see them every year,) is the Joe Bassboat trying to negotiate a breaking inlet in his 225 hp potato chip. Other times, its 10 year old kids riding willy-nilly on a danferously fast jet ski...alone.

Of course, lets not forget that Reality Show we all love....The Public Boat Ramp!

Unfortunately the "reality show" that is boaters who only show up at the lake Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day (and seem to almost always be extremely intoxicated) will probably keep me off the lake this holiday. It was absolutely crazy last year. The fireworks show over the lake ended around 9:45, followed by hundreds of boaters racing back to the ramp...in the dark.

It's those 3-times-per-year boaters that supply guys like me with 20 year old, "brand new" outboards, for pennies on the dollar.

I typically stay off the water on the 4th and Memorial day unless I go to an out of the way spot. This is rookie weekend as I like to call it.

However, I live on the ICW and I tailgate on my deck the afternoon of the 4th and watch the police pull people over left and right.
