My brother and I were talking about some of our favorite boats that were around when we were kids. And, as you can imagine, Whalers played a huge role in that. One in particular struck us as just being so unbelievably cool and we realized that we really didn't know much about it. It was our neighbors 13 ' -- but the hull was totally black (and had a matching 20hp black max). I remember that we all used to call it a "frostbite boat/whaler" — small boats that allegedly accompanied the dingy-sailors out in the winter to pluck them out of the icy waters should they get knocked down. If our memory serves, there were maybe three of them (these black whalers) in town — the one in our cove and two in the harbor. Does this ring any bells with anyone here -- was this just a Marblehead (Mass) thing? Was there a black gelcoat option during the early 70s? We're these really something specific to frostbiting or was that just some myth of our childhood?
