This is a fishing report I wrote up for my fishing forums, however there was so much good Whalering throughout the day I thought I would share. Key Details (For people who don't want to read my B.S. :) : Date: Sun, 7-10-11 Video Report: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHfeHoP2lzI
What can I say, it was a trip to remember! The initial plan was to work Duxbury and do some potluck fishing, but good old Allan did some reconnaissance on Sat for us and found that the bite was happening out of HMB. We decided to tow down and get us some PINK. I was very surprised at the results. The Taco did a wonderful job towing, even with the steep and windy roads leading to Pillar Point. There is a factory service bulletin for adding a rear leaf spring which you can see by the picture the truck needs (if used for towing/hauling) but long story short it did great. This will most likely be my future vehicle (and no, I don’t want a full size as it will be my daily driver). The truck is rated to tow 6500lbs. I was not going crazy on the freeway, kept speeds 65mph or less. The road leading to the harbor is a two lane highway with steep grades. Again, I was impressed. Back to the report, arrived at Allan’s house and had Mr. Electrician fix my trailer lights which had gone out on the way, broken ground wire; fixed in no time and on the road. Launched and headed out to where Allan fished the day before. Just short of the numbers we came across a bunch of birds and fishy looking water, so instead of pushing on we decided to put them in. Here are a few of them. Lots of bait too, things are looking good! Rods setup and ready for action. My two Lami's got a real workout today, and what a joy they were to fish with. After that, the pandemonium began. Couldn’t have been more than 15 minutes before Allan’s rod tripped. Immediately it looked like it might be a Silver, so he handed the rod off to Stephen (who has been out of action for about a year or so) to have some fun. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot0-1.jpg After that it was time for Discovery Channel. Whales were breeching all around us, full on jumping out of the water, just amazing. Then came the huge Thresher shark. Mike saw a Salmon jumping out of the water so we all looked, then we saw something come up out of the water, like a fin..but it wasn’t thick enough to be a dorsal fin…we kept watching and then we knew, it was a huge Thresher. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot-1.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot1.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot2.jpg We made our way over until we were right up next to it, actually went over top of it by mistake, but we saw that it was eating a Salmon! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot3.jpg Then it was more fish action. The guys started yelling and when I looked back to my corner both my rod and Stephens rod were popped off the clip and pinned down! Got mine in, a very decent fish around 17lbs or so. Some time later Stephen hooked up into my fishes twin. Bendo goes the Lamiglas! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot4.jpg Then it was a steady stream of hook up’s. Lots of doubles, a few triples even! We released many Silvers as well as short Kings, all but one or two were taken out of the water for measuring, all should still be swimming around out there. Strike position http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot-2.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot5.jpg "It's fast and furious out here" - Allan Choy Double http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/Fishing/SnapShot1-1.jpg We found a mix of Krill and Squid in the fish bellies. Bloody...felt like we were Tuna fishing out there! We were stuck at 7 fish for the longest time, getting hook up after hookup, many Kings that were just at the size limit. Not wanting to risk it, we let them all go. Finally around 3pm or so we got the devil fish in the boat. Docked the boat as usual, noted that the Warden had a bunch of Salmon on his truck bed taking photo’s. Went to get the trailer and when I got back Mike and Stephen said “you’re not going to believe this.” Uh ohhh….we accidentally kept one Silver! Son of a…. Really not sure how this happened as we released so many…it must have been during one of the double or triple hook ups that one slipped through. Check your fish guys, we got a citation and a limit fish taken away! Look at those gums carefully! Whatever, not going to let that ruin my day, it was awesome! Warden was cool, so we had him take our picture. That's it folks, go get em! |

Littleblue, Thanks for the report and pictures.... it reminds me to try the planking recipe you posted for me on another thread after I saw a bbq salmon picture you posted Here it is for for those that missed it... Thanks. It's a great recipe I got off of a fishing board I'm on. Here you go. I found that it tastes better if you don't go toooo crazy with the rub. Too much takes away from the natural Salmon goodness. Salmon Rub Combine all ingredients; store in airtight container. Makes about 1 1/2 cups. Directions |

That is an awesome post. The video clip and all the pictures are great. It's a shame you lost the catch due to to the silver. For what it's worth, I have heard the fish had a good chance of showing up at a free food center for the unfortunate homeless. You guys use the pot licking term on the west coast too? It's a term we use here on the gulf coast too. Thanks for the great report. |

Looks to me like a fantastic day on the water. Jasper - It looks like you've installed some kind of rail along the stern of the boat...do you have photos of that detail? Right now on my Dad's 22, we're using an aluminum I-Beam U-Bolted to the stern downrigger risers to lean against as you fight fish around the motor...but it looks like yours is lower. The footage of you fighting that king in the stern looks like you could easily go out the back if you weren't careful.... Thanks, and congrats on a great time with some good friends. All that was missing were celebratory cigars on the ride home... :) |

David, Yes, it was a great day. I was contemplating bringing a few cigars but didn't want to drive back home to get them...mistake! The rail was installed by the previous owner. The height is about the same as the gunwale. After putting the foam pipe insulation it pretty comfortable to lean against (more so than the gunwales anyway). I have the splash well back there too, no worries going out the back. I'd probably have a higher likelihood of falling over the side. Here are a few pictures so you can see better. |

Great score Jasper and a terrific post. I fished Soquel hole on the same day and came up empty. Bummer about the inadvertent silver, especially after being so careful to avoid any undersized kings. Sometimes it's really hard to see the white, easy mistake to make. Also nice to see that the Tacoma can handle the Outrage. I always tow mine with the 'burb, but wondered if my Taco would be up to it in a pinch. Finally, the boat looks great, and it sounds like you've got the double stack routine worked out well on the downriggers. That's no small thing in lumpy seas but it clearly helped you guys score a nice limit. |

Great stuff, Jasper. But what a carpet-bagger, as I told you and the Bodega Bay world via VHF today up off Carmet. Man, you're all over Northern California out-fishin' the locals from harbor to harbor. How about leaving some for the rest of us? Tony How did you do today? Fishing must have been pretty good, 'cause I even got one (actually I got eight -- six shakers, one big 10+ lb Coho, and finally one decent keeper king). |

Those are excellent size coho! That first one on the video was a beast. Too bad you can't keep them right now, I would much prefer to eat them over a king any day. |

Hang on that's too much trouble...a sharp knife, wasabi paste and a vial of soy onboard are a lot easier.. Dom |

Haha. Thanks guys, man nothing beats a good day out on the water. Tony, good talking to you yesterday, though I never saw you in the fleet. I hung out on the outside edge all day. We finished 4 for 4 up to 20lbs. My buddy lost a big one. We had quite a few short strikes that we couldn't keep on the hook for more than a few seconds. Apparently the brown water closer to harbor did indeed hold fish...stupid mistake, I should have listened to my gut instead of following everyone to the numbers. Arrrrgggh! Also, we caught our fish at the end of the day when most of the fleet had left in 250ft of water, I probably should have moved towards you earlier. Andy, the Taco is more than up to it. I used it again to tow to Bodega, and again full boat and 4 guys. No problems at all. |
