Hi Folks-

I am in the market for a Whaler, and have looked at a range of 17-19' ranging from a 72 Cohasset(!) to a late 2000's Mauntauk. When i do find that right boat/right price, does anyone have a recommendation for a BW experienced surveyor in NC? Much appreciated!

If you follow the link below to the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors site you can find surveyors in your state (follow "Find A Surveyor" on the upper left). Call around and find someone who knows Whalers.

Great, thanks! Most of the searches I have been doing are in the Southport/Wilmington NC area (marinesurvey.org shows a half dozen listed in this area) or otherwise up in the Raleigh/Durham 'triangle' area where the list is slimmer so may have to ask someone to travel if i find something there. Thanks again.

Depending upon your experience, ability to assess condition and age of boat hiring a surveyor for a boat this size is likely going to be a hassle/waste of your money. They generally do not have the ability to rate the condition of the motor unless an in water survey. Then they typically will just tell you it works and is not overheating at the moment.

Thanks number9, I was wondering about this with smaller boats. I expect a surveyor who 'has a thing for Whalers' would provide pretty good value when I am looking at, for ex., a 72 Cohasset with multiple previous owners, but perhaps less so when I am looking at a 1 owner 2005 garage kept Mauntauk with less than 100 hours....

This will be my first Whaler (and, from what I have seen from Whaler owners on this site and elsewhere, probably not my last and most likely a boat I will have for much of the rest of my life). So given my lack of experience, it may still be worth the cost (although never having used a surveyor before, I do not yet know what that typical cost might be) if he can point out something important i might have otherwise missed, etc.
