[What is] the octane requirement for a 1996 Evinrude 115-HP OceanPro engine? I have always run 87-octane. Yesterday however, I was advised to run 91-octane to assist in reduction of engine smoke. Does this make sense? I didn't think octane was a factor.

I sure miss my pal Sal DiMercurio when these dumb questions come up for me.

The VRO has been checked and was reported to be working fine.

No, that is bad advice.

Regular Unleaded 87 octane gasoline is just fine for your 1996 Evinrude OceanPro 115. There is no "engine smoke reduction" benefit to using 91 octane gas.

Tom, I though I remember reading that 89-octane or middle grade should be used.

In our area, the only non-ethanol gas you can buy is in the higher octane grades. I assume the only disadvantage in the higher octane gas is a higher price.

I actually looked in my Chilton manual and found nada.

I always run at least 89 or 93. Reason being if it sits it loses octane. If you burn through gas like snot then do NOT worry about it. If you are like 80-percent of us run 89 to be safe.

Good info Nick.

I know :)

Seriously--it is worth the $0.10 to $0.15 if it is going to sit. If you use it and fill it EVERY weekend--Forgetaboutit!

Most of the smoke in a two-cycle engine like a 1996 Evinrude 115-HP Ocean Pro will be from the oil burning off. Use a better oil if you want to cut down on the smoke. Try some premium synthetic oil like Evinrude XD100. It is supposed to burn without any ash and no smoke.

To the best of my knowledge, 91 Octane is ethanol free - as I saw in the news or some other report just a week or so ago. I'll see if I can confirm that information.

As Jim points out - the smoke is just burning oil - but you want oil in the cylinders for lubrication.

Performance with ethanol fuels is decreased by about 3-4 % with E-10 as I recall - made the calculatione quite some time ago. This is due to the energy per pound of ethanol being about half of that of gasoline.

And as Tom points out - the octane has nothing to do with smoke or oil burning. ---- Jerry/Idaho

It actually could but it would be so slight you probably would not notice. Reason being 93 burns "slower" than 87 and hence it does not ping or knock in higher compression engines. Being it burns slower it might burn the oil better but again...minimal. I hear going to XD50 cuts it down greatly.

In 1996 OMC specified a minimum 86 octane gasoline with up to 10 percent Ethanol be used. Don't overthink this, use 87 Regular Unleaded. It will be fine.

I buy gas anywhere from 1 to 6 months between fill-ups. I only use 87 octane Regular Unleaded and use no additives at all. My conventional two stroke outboards couldn't care less.

Don't know if this helps, but I switched back to using XD 30 in my 93 25 Evinrude, from the Wal-Mart brand TCW-3 and noticed considerably less smoke.
I never had a problem runnoing the Wal-mart stuff, but my motor did smoke more.

Thanks to all. I really was looking for what the OMC recommendation was. I may indeed try better oil though.
