I have found a [1986 Boston Whaler SPORT 13 with] side console which looks in original condition powered by a 2004 Yamaha 40-HP two-cycle outboard engine. No bottom paint, no major dings, no repaired holes, etc., and very little gel coat cracking. Wood needs refinishing. Exterior gel coat still shines, interior gel coat oxidized but looks restorable as is. Does come with [galvanized steel] trailer which needs work but overall solid. Asking price now is $3,500. Assuming a dry hull, and solid condition, is this price reasonable? Or more room to negotiate? What can you expect in performance out of the 40-HP? I have yet to [sea trial]. What to look for in overall performance? What should the cockpit gel coat color be? Thanks for any and all advice.

A 1986 should be Desert Tan inside and out. The $3,500 is EXTREMELY reasonably and probably sold by now. |

Just sold a 1985 13' Sport with a 2001 40 Yamaha earlier this season. Used it over 4 years and could not have been happier with the performance of the Yamaha. I agree with Nick, you better move quick before this one gets away. Email me if can assist. Loved that boat. |

That's a perfect combo. The price couldn't be any better. I would have asked $5000.Take a look at Sport 15s too. Much better riding boat. |

I have a 1985 Sport 13 with a 2-stroke Yamaha 40hp. Performance is scintillating. It explodes onto plane with part throttle even with the motor trimmed out for max speed. It's so overpowered, the only reason I can think of to have 40hp on that hull is to plane with 6 adults... which would be very crowded indeed on such a little boat. -Peter |

I run a 50 hpr Tohatsu TLDI on my 13 and I would have been upset with anything less. It just barely pulls me up at 170 on skiis. I'm surprised people say the 40 is overpowering the hull. Then again, I've been too lazy and cheap to buy a higher pitch prop than my 14, but I'm hitting 36 mph easily and have plenty of power to turn a much higher pitch. maybe I'll say it's overpowered when I'm hitting well over 40.. ;) |

Monty, you don't mention what year your 13 is. If it's one of the newer ones that weight about 600 lbs., instead of the "classic" 13 that weighs half as much, then perhaps you have a point. But most people seem to agree 40 hp is plenty for the classic. |

Monty--What does your acronym "hpr" mean? I looked it up on ACRONYMFINDER.COM and I did not see anything relevant: http://www.acronymfinder.com/HPR.html |

jim - hpr is horsepower, I guess I grew accustomed to that on the car forums, I thought most would understand the acronym as forum shorthand.I have a 1980 hull. Yes, technically is is overpowered according to the Coast Guard plate, but after seeing the performance in a variety of situations, especially waterskiing, I still say 50 horsepower is an excellent choice and by no means 'dangerous power'. I let my buddy drive my boat this weekend, the first person I've ever taught how to drive a boat, we did not take it to full throttle until he had a clear understanding of the handling of the boat and how to negotiate wakes. If you gave that boat to someone brand new and told them 'have fun', they could get themselves flung out of the boat quickly. |
