Off Topic, I know. Many of you know that my username was my first Golden Retriever"s name. And hopefully more know that my last Golden's name was PITA. We were a Therapy International team and that he passed suddenly last July at 5 years and 4 months. I am actively seeking a third, but as a single firefighter working 24 hour shifts, a puppy is almost out of the question. So I would like to reach out to our members as a network, to try to find a mellow tempered 1 to 3 year old male Golden. I am not looking for a free partner, just the right Golden for the job. I am available to travel the east coast for the right dog. Any help will be greatly appreciated, especially from JimH, if you would allow this topic to run. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays! Have you tried PETFINDER? Lots of dogs needing homes. You can narrow search to what you are looking for. |

Find the local Golden Retriever club and a ask about rescues. Two of my four Newfoundlands were rescues and were great.--Chuck |

+1 for the rescue route. I know a high end golden breeder/handler. Maybe she can help you out. I will ask. |

Mike, what is a Therapy International Team? Would a CAT work? You can leave them for 24 hours or more, no problem. Probably won't work though, its hard to change a dog person into a cat person, although at one time I was a dog person. |

Michael - Rescues are a good way to go. Our last three German Shepherds were rescues. We got our last in April, a 2-3 yr old from Anchorage (600 miles away), but I had a co-worker flying from Anchorage to Juneau and she was able to escort Tessa for $75 instead of paying shipping costs. Tessa was picked up as a stray in Anchorage. How could somebody let a pure bred become a stray and not re-claim her from the pound? You won't always know what you get in a rescue. Tessa replaced Hunter, who we got as a 7-month old rescue, and he was the MOST OUTSTANDING DOG ever. Many of the rescue dogs are already trained, housebroken, and just need a good home. Good luck. As you know, taking a pet is a lot of work, heartwarming and also heartbreaking. JimP |

Jim, I have a purebred Shepherd too that was a stray. Has buckshot in his hip and belly. I think he used to chase cattle or horses. He came to us housebroken, friendly, never barks (only once or twice in 12 yrs), and he runs a housefull(3-4) of bullmastiffs. He only has one vice, he kills cats, but only if he can catch one at his age. |

Zotcha, We tried rescues and it didnt work out. Many have had abuse issues. I love Golden's and Lab's. Yet I have three dogs of different breeds: Basset, Norwich, and a Jack Russel. I think the Basset would make an awesome single guy dog. They don't need the excercise that the others do, they are loyal as hell, and they have the sweeest temperment of any breed we have ever had. I wish you luck finding a new friend. |

I think Mike has it figured out that he wants another Golden. We should help him towards thag goal. Otherwise, I'd be trying to unload one of my over eating Bullmastiffs on him. I'd like to see the food bill at the firehouse after one of them move in. |

Mike, I put the word in with the wife. She is at some dog shows in Savannah and is with the Golden people all day tomorrow. She will let me know what they say. |

If you are interested in a Minnesota dog, I will drive all or part way to deliver the dog to you. (I'm in St. Paul). Good luck. |

MAN. I THANK you guys! I'm in a little bit of a funk here and am looking for the right dog. As a Therapy Dog International handler I have a little bit of a responsibility of pre-schooling any candidate. I need a socially fit, or adapted, male Golden, ready to work and be trained. Not that an equivalent male German Shepard couldn't do this type of work...I've just always worked with Golden Retrievers. Thank you so much for so much reception thus far, and to Jimh for the allowance. Michael. |

Mike...my outlaws get their labs from a lab only shelter an hour south of me. I will talk to them over the weekend and see what they got. Come down and spend the weekend, etc. Len is lonely. |

The knee jerk comment about rescues is just wrong. Please do not rule them out. There are some with problems, however, there are some great dogs out there. You just have to be smart enough to sort them out. We have one that has made hundreds of visits to nursing homes. Good Luck in your search. With this information network, someone may walk in tomorrow with just the right dog. |

Frank is on a plane from Michigan-FL. Sandy is up there showing off her fat dog(s) and maybe she knows of a Goldie. |

We have gotten a few dogs from rescues and they have been good dogs. If you are going to a good rescue, they should be able to tell you the dog's behavior before you pick up the dog. |

I totally agree with wezie. My daughter had 2 of them and they were great. No issues at all. |

Michael, What do you do with your dog during your 24 hour shifts? |

Most difficult. Have sitters come by or deliver and pick up 25 hours later. Preparing an invisible fence and dog door into boat house below, but dishonest people would only have to remove a collar and he would be gone. Chip him? Sure. A one year old could stay upstairs in the house and have friends/neighbors feed him at night. Worked well before. Thanks. Michael. |

Zot: Just curious: why do you specify male? We have had dogs (pets) of both sexes over the years, and I have generally found the female to be slightly more preferable as a pet - all other things being equal. |

I found it the other way. Maybe I have just had (and experienced) strong personality alpha females, but males have been easier. The males have been more interested in playing rather than the power struggle games. |
