Is the 1996 17' Outrage considered to be a well built boat? I know Whaler had some years that were not as good as others. Thank you--Stephen

Yes, it is a very well built, very well thought out and very large 17'er.

I surveyed one a few years ago for another member here and was impressed with the entire model.

Stephen - I have one and there is no question as to it being a well built boat. I normally use it on lakes in Idaho - but have it in salt water once in Washington. It is a bit heavier than the earlier 17 Outrages - but that is an advantage regarding safety, stability and ride. Granted it might take a bit more fuel - but that is a no-never-mind.

BW did not make many of these - but that could be the result of other non-related questions/problems of the buyers.

At the time I bought mine in 1996, I had a 13 super sport which a couple of friends did not appreciate if the weather turned a bit nasty. A dealer had a new montauk and the 17 Outrage setting side by side - I bought the Outrage. -----Jerry/Idaho

Great riding in rough water. Loss of interior room due to new hull design and less stable at rest make older designs more desireable.

I am not familiar with the notion that "Whaler had some years that were not as good as others [years]."

I would like a list of the good years and the bad years, according to this notion. Thank you.

Thank you all for your very helpful comments. I am going to go forward with looking at this boat.

My reference to some years not being as good as others is based on reading comments posted on this site whereby people have discussed that some of the Reebok years were not good years for Whaler. Perhaps that is a misperception?

There are several factions of owners. Each has its' opinion on the various design iterations that have occurred given the many owners of Boston Whaler since inception. I suggest you read the History of Boston Whaler article in the reference section.

Some say the models designed in the (fill in the blank) decade are better than (fill in the blank) decade.

We all really like whalers. Period.

This is a great boat.

Comparing it to a classic 17 is apples and oranges. It's much bigger, much heavier, and it rides much better in rough seas.

I disagree that a classic is somehow more desirable if you are talking function.

cc378/Stephen,

I can't think of a better 17' boat. I have one(located on MV) w/130 hp Evinrude. I fish Nomans, Paradise, Elizabeth's, etc. If you care to discuss in detail or see another boat for comparison, send me an e-mail.
