In our family it's a tradition on fathers day where my family does what I want to do all day. So that means that the family will be on the Whaler tomorrow. They have it pretty easy. I will launch the boat in Waukegan and then drive the shoreline south about 8 miles and pick my wife and kids up on the 'dog beach' in Lake Bluff. They get to walk one block down to the beach and step into the boat stocked with their favorite goodies. Hey wait-I'm doing all the work again! It's ok as long as I have the Whaler out I'm good! Wind is supposed to be out of the west so if we're lucky we may get a smooth ride all the way to Chicago, I can't wait! |

We did our Father's Day boating today, a relaxing picnic cruise to Capitola. Tomorrow I'm getting up early to do a 12-mile stand up paddleboard run in preparation for a race next weekend. After that, relax! |

This is my first year without my Dad. Puzzled about how to fill the day or think about it. He went so quick, both a blessing and a devastating occurrence. MISS YOU DAD. |

Sorry to hear about that Lizard. I lost my father a few years back. It does seem strange to watch time march by without dad. Happy dads day every one. |

I missed my dad too. He passed away right after fathers day 2 years ago. It's been so tough. I have so many things that I wanted to share with him, especially boating which is a hobby I picked up afterw he passed. Love you dad! |

Happy Fathers Day to my dad, who wasn't much of a boater himself but encouraged me in my early efforts. Even to the extent of moving the Star Chief out of the garage so I could "personalize" my first boat. This is 1972: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v678/OldToby/MeandMick1972.jpg |

Lizard, Sorry to hear about your dad. This is my first father's day without my dad also. My son surprised me this morning driving in 350 miles to spend the day with me. He and I are going to spend the afternoon watching a marathon of fishing videos we filmed together with my dad over the years. Then we will place two flags at his grave (the Marine Corps and US flags), toast a drink or three to the old man, and share a 4 lb. lobster thermadore, my dad's favorite meal. My son made me a beautiful triangular display case for his grandfather's burial flag out of Hawaiian koa with ebony and burl claro walnut inlays. I had been planning to make one for some time but couldn't quite bring myself to start work on it. He gave it a French polish finish (a very advanced hand applied shellac finishing technique my father taught him when he was a teenager). I'm getting misty eyed writing about this so I will just say I am very proud of the man my son has grown up to become. |

So, I found myself alone today, which made it particularly hard. Took the 2-wheeler out for a ride. Rode out to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. My Dad is not interred there, he is on the East Coast, but this is close as I could get today. My Dad was Army, Counter-Intelligence. It would have been a beautiful day for some time out on the boat, but it was not in me for some reason. It was quiet, misty, a bit overcast. But I liked the quiet and I conjured up some moments between my Dad and myself. Then I headed down to the fishmongers, for some chowder and a martini. |

Lizard, yesterday was my first fathers day without my Dad also, I worked during the day so that helped keep me from dwelling too much on his absence.... Pat |
