This last week as I was headed out of Milwaukee onto Lake Michigan on a '73 Outrage 21 owned by the University of Wisconsin - Madison I was surprised to see two other banana Outrage 21's that were also working. One was tending a sailing class for the Milwaukee Yacht Club and the other was being used for research by the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.

I guess I'm not TOO surprised, as you can't find a better platform for working over the side than these old boats.

I saw those two 21 Smoothsides owned by the University of Wisconsin up in Door County WI over the 4th of July holiday.

Actually, only one of those was owned by the University. The other was my personally-owned boat that I was donating use for a project.

I also saw you towing your 19 through Sturgeon Bay, LHG.

Whalers off the coast of Milwaukee are relatively rare. As far as I can tell, I'm the only 18-Outrage from the region that makes an appearance on the Big Pond, and few of any models show up when I'm about.

That UW-Milwaukee Fresh Water Sciences boat is typically on the hard in their yard off Greenfield, don't believe I've seen it wetted ever. They've got the Neeskay and an Osprey cabin boat in operation most times. And I believe the sailing tender belongs to the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, as opposed to the MYC. MYC has been operating a large Mako (?) with twin E-TECs, if I recall. The sailing center also has a well worn 16 footer used as a tender.

Sorry I missed you out there Kevin, would have been a site to see with, not just another Whaler, but 3 vintage Outrages plying the lake.

Anyone going to be up around Fish Creek the last weekend in August?

PRJ - I know a couple who have a ribside 21 Outrage III model, with Johnson 60's, in Milwaukee. They also trail it up to Door, where I have seen them several times, including last weekend. Keep an eye out for it.

Keith, I saw you guys all over the place in Door that week, but never had a chance to catch up. I saw the boats parked in Jacksonport, saw the trailers in the grass lot in Bailey's Harbor, and at the Bailey's launch ramp the day before. Then I saw the boats being trailed up towards Ellison Bay!

I have both my 19 and 25 Outrage up there for the entire season. You might have seen the 19 parked in the Bailey's Harbor grass lot.

I forgot about that ribside with the twin Johnsons - I saw it in a slip at South Shore Yacht Club. Nice looking boat, but I couldn't decipher the boats name because it's in a hard to read script.

Larry - I think this is the first time I've caught sight of your 19 in person, although I may have seen it being trailered in Milwaukee a few years back. For some reason I figured that smooth side slipped in Egg Harbor was yours, too.

PRJ - funny you should say that UW-Milwaukee's boat is never in the water. That boat, the R/V Orion, used to be owned by UW-Madison and I had access to both boats (the other is named R/V Dawn Treader). With budget cuts the Orion was given to UW-Milwaukee on the condition that I could have access to it the one or two weeks a year I need two boats. Long story short, when I asked to use the Orion for a week I was informed that it was in use *every* day of the summer and could not be loaned. That's why I now use my personally-owned boat for work. Unreimbursed, I might add.

Next week I'm in Kewaunee, and the last week in August I'll be living aboard while diving and hiking around Isle Royale - this time for fun.

Looks like we ought to have a Milwaukee Whaler-Gam, I see lots of names of lots of places that I frequent here as well. Who knows who you might see at the South Shore YC?

Next time I see a ribside about the area I'll stop and say hi. Look for a 28 foot red and white Marinette dive boat (MOLLY V) and that'll be us. Based at Jerry's dock, but trailered for diving anwhere between Whtefish Bay and Chicago. If you see us out on the water, stop by and hail us for a howdy. Call on 16 if you see the dive flag up so we can clear you in close.

When is the Wisconsin crew going to cross the Lake to hang out with the Michiganders?

Damndest thing on the R/V Orion, Keith, perhaps I'm not out on the water enough to catch these boats at their business! I'll have to head down to the SSYC and have a look for the twin Johnson boat as well.

While I expect that you, Keith, are working off the Eastern Shore of Door County, perhaps you've some experience with recreational boating on the Quiet Side as well. I've done some recent design work over there, but never boated. Seems like it would be a more challenging and longer haul on that coast without the benefit and luxury of bays, marinas and related facilities. But I'd like to give it an exploration. Can either you or Larry write a few words about boating on the Lake side of the Door Peninsula?

And Jeff, I'm game. If I can find a willing compadre and a renewed comfort level with my next engine, I'll be there. Maybe we'll get together in Milwaukee and plan it over a beer, two-tree.

PRJ, it seems we're the opposite - I have little boat time on the Bay side, with the exception Sturgeon Bay and adjacent waters. Honestly, I try to avoid the Bay side as much as possible - way too many people for my liking. The Lake side is much different, most notably a more rustic shoreline and colder, clearer water.

The ramps I use on the Lake side include Sawyer Park in Sturgeon Bay (I kind of like the long, slow trip through the canal), Bailey's Harbor, and one on Cana Island Road on Moonlight Bay. Moonlight Bay is my favorite - very quiet and rustic, but recently they put a sign up closing that one around 11 PM or so every night.

There is a primitive ramp in Lily Bay, meaning no ramp at all and more suited for kayaks. There is a ramp with breakwall in Whitefish Bay, but every time I've stopped there in the last several years it's been completely sanded in. There is also a ramp in Rawley Bay, but I've never been there.

There's really nothing too hazardous over on that side, but there is a reef several hundred yards off Jacksonport you want to watch for. There is a red nun marking the reef, and if there's any sort of sea you'll see it breaking. If you go inside the reef along the shore at Jacksonport, be watchfull of old pier pilings off the end of County V and Lakeshore Park beach. They just break the surface in calm waters, and you cannot see them if there is any sort of sea. Sometimes there a hazard buoy there, but most times not. It is a great place to snorkel, as there are a lot of artifacts from the pier, including two wrecked schooners. There is a third schooner a few hundred yards north.

Coming into Bailey's harbor from the south it does get pretty shallow on the shore side. Just use the safe water buoy and stay east of the green can and you'll be fine.

There is a large, wrecked schooner in the middle of North Bay that is fun to check out. It's in about 10 feet of water and easily seen from the surface. There is another along the shore northeast of that one. If you want the coordinates, let me know. Last time I was there, there was a large pound net set off the mouth of the bay. It's normally not a problem to cruise between buoys, but on this occasion there was a large poly line just below the surface between the buoys, so be wary.

If the wind is from the west and the Bay is too choppy, definitely head over to the other side. Cave Point is worth checking out, too.
