There were a total of Nine spotted on Saturday near South Haven. PRELIMINARY LOCAL STORM REPORT...SUMMARY ..TIME... ...EVENT... ...CITY LOCATION... ...LAT.LON... 1130 AM WATER SPOUT 30 W OVAL BEACH 42.66N 86.82W A TOTAL OF 9 WATERSPOUTS WERE OBSERVED WITH TWO SEPARATE As well as the 5 noted in the link above. Those I believe were off Milwaukee. |

The video appears to have been recorded from a freighter. I have seen it on broadcast television already, but with no attribution to who recorded it. Probably a crewman or officer on a Great Lakes freighter was the source. |

I wonder how "powerful" these things are? You can't exactly use the Fujita scale to rate them, and since they aren't loaded with debris and flying railroad cars, they appear to be relatively tame. I don't think I'd go near one, but I would like to see one. |

David, I read this morning that waterspouts have much lower wind speeds than tornados. The news article stated generally they are in the 50-60mph range which was surprisingly lower than what I expected. |

That's sort-of what I figured (not that I would know), but they just didn't look to be all that violent. I still wouldn't get close to one. |

I believe the video was taken from the Great Lakes ore carrier Wilford Sykes just before noon Saturday about 45 miles east of Milwaukee. There is a story about the video and person who took it on Boatnerd.com. |
