Hello all, Im wondering if anyone out there owns or has owned a Montauk in Alaska. I spent 3 years in Cordova, AK but never owned a boat until I moved down to the Gulf of Mexico. I plan on moving back in the next 2 years and am not sure whether I should take my boat with me or sell it and get one with a semi-enclosed cabin. Im wondering the amount of use I would get out of it due to sea and weather conditions. Any input from y'all out there in the whaler world would be greatly appreciated.

You must be a Coastie? Three year tour on the buoy tender then a transfer to Mobile?

I spent two years aboard the "SWEETBRIER" in Cordova (84-86) using the CG 17' Boston Whaler Montauk as the morale boat. Had a 70 hp on it. Fine for the local Cordova area.

Then three years in Kodiak on "FIREBUSH" with my own 1982 Montauk with a 90 that I trailered from Governors Island, NY (89-92). Great boat for the local Kodiak waters. Caught a 160 pound halibut with her. CG Base Kodiak also runs Montauks with 60s or 70s on them. They have a fleet of 15-20(?).

Then I got transferred to Juneau and brought the Montauk with me (92-present). Kept the Montauk until 97 when I jumped 5' to a 1990 Revenge 22 - W.T. The Montauk is a great boat for the Juneau area too - lots of them around.

In my experience, 8 years along the Gulf Coast of Alaska with my own Montauk, the Montauk has no problems - if you watch your weather and bring your foul weather gear.

Married? The ladies (wife and daughters) enjoy the enclosed head on the Revenge. We also go overnight camping with the bigger boat.

Hi D,
I was on the fence just like you. I opted for the 15' over the Montauk. At the time I really should have went with something larger but I wouldn't sell my 15' for anything. If I could do it all over again I would hands down buy a 22 Revenge WT. I believe this is the most economical, useable Whaler for the PWS area. It can get you anywhere in the area safely, quickly and with an enclosed helm. I don't think Valdez had 10 days of sun this summer.
If you plan on using your Whaler infrequently, a Montauk would be more than adequate. You could always get a forward shelter. I just have found that a larger Whaler would enable me to hunt, fish, and explore more areas and also have a longer boating season. I don't know your particular needs but I hope this may be helpful.

Ha!! You hit the nail on the head jim. They decommed SWEETBRIAR some years back. The SYCAMORE took her spot. Its a 225' Alaskan workhorse with a top speed of "nowheres fast". Sounds like my Montauk would be ok up there. I think my main concern is crew comfort(especially for the wife). Im ok with a pair of grundens and some xtratuffs. Thanks very much for the insight, Semper Paratus!

Just sent you some pictures of my old Montauk in Kodiak.

As AK153 states, the forward shelter is a real plus.

Got the pictures, thanks Jim. I definitely like the idea of the forward shelter yall mentioned and yours looks great. I think if I did that I would also want to install one of those forward decks to add some storage space for those overnight camping trips.
