I believe I was fairly diligent in the configuration of the Lowrance HDS chart plotter device this season so that its TRIP 1 distance log accumulator would record all of my boat movement. So far this season the data showMILES = 767.2
HOURS = 72:23
AVERAGE SPEED = 10.6-MPH
MAX SPEED = 42.8=MPH
Curiously, I think the maximum speed was set just last weekend when running in rather cooler water, about 57-degrees, and cold air, about 45-degrees.
The total time underway of 72-hours 23-minutes is less than the engine time, as the TRIP CALCULATOR only accumulates data when the boat is moving at 0.8-MPH or higher. The engine probably has a few more hours of idle time at the dock.
I have not tracked my fuel usage, but if I assume a fuel economy of 3-MPG, which is a good figure based on my many calculations of overall fuel economy on several trips, it looks like I burned about
767.2-miles x 1-gallon/3-miles = 256-gallons
of gasoline fuel this season. I bet my average gasoline cost was over $4-per-gallon, so I probably spent more than $1,000 on gasoline. My oil use rate is about 1:60, so I can estimate I used about 4.3-gallons of oil, which costs about $32-gallon. This adds to the fuel cost an additional $140. A rough estimate of the fuel cost for the season would then be about $1,140 or more. If we average this cost over the total time, we get an average of $15.75-per-hour for fuel.
Most of our boating was done in three one-week-long vacations, so I will estimate we were operating the boat about 20-days in total. This gives an average day's run of about 35-miles. With the average speed of 10.6-MPH, the average time underway each day would be about 3-hours 15-minutes, and the average daily fuel cost is about $51.
Since all of our boating activity took place at least 250-miles away from where we live, I suppose I should also consider the cost to trailer the boat and the fuel burned by the truck. On some trips the truck used more fuel than the boat. What this tells me is that I should move closer to where I like to boat.
