Thanksgiving North Coast California dungeness crab, from pot to pot. Yummy! Happy crabby Thanksgiving Day to all. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ Thanksgiving12dungeness034.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ Thanksgiving12dungeness038.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ Thanksgiving12dungeness039.jpg Yeah, there will be a lot of gobble-gobble and other stuff on the table as well, but dungies ARE Thanksgiving out here. We're happy this year 'cuz the commercial guys are getting three bucks a pound for these crab, and damn if they don't deserve that and more. Plus we get 'em for free with a little work ;-) Anyway, lots to be thankful about this year, that's for damn sure!!! Tony |

Feel sorry for me. Years ago I developed a food allergy for crabs, shrimp and lobster. Can't really remember what they taste like. Like you say, we do have a lot to be thankful for this year. |

I think people should eat local food. It is great to eat seafood if you live by the sea. The notion that the entire population of the USA can eat seafood is probably not a sustainable idea. We should eat what we have available to us locally. In my case, that would mean I would eat: tomatoes, sugar beets, rabbit, and venison. We used to be able to get corn but now it all grown for ethanol. |

Great idea, sustainable diet. One sees that word on many products now. Now for our local sustainable diet here: The deer eat most anything we plant and I'd get burned at the stake if I shot one, so that leaves slugs, snails, seagulls (inexhaustible supply of these). And we'd need 4 additional stomachs to eat the locally grown crop of dairy cow silage. Oh, anyone have a recipe for gopher stew? JimL |

C'mon Jim. You and I are North Coast neighbors, and just offshore we've got king salmon seven months per year, plus rockfish, ling cod, dungies, halibut, albacore tuna, abalone, AND seagulls ;-) Tony Hey! Living in Inverness/Tomales Bay as you do, you have some of the world's greatest oysters just a couple of miles from your home, plus clams ripe for the picking at every minus tide. Viva locavore N. Calif !!! |

Well I'll be having the traditional turkey Thanksgiving dinner this year. but not so for some of our less fortunate residents. Many Floridians are out of work and homeless this year due to our Governors austerity programs against the poor. He also took manatees off the endangered list and made them fair game. So in lite of that The Salvation Army will be serving manatee steaks (yummy) this year. Some of these manatees have been speared by local spearfishing clubs and donated to the state. Well if folks really like them, an industry might sprout from this, after all Governor Scott has vowed to increase jobs in the state, but so far, no luck. I think I could harpoon a 100 lb calf from my 13 footer this winter when the gulf and the bays turn cold and the manatees head up river to the warmer waters at the springs and power plants. http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=4342 rich |

Thank you Tony for this thread! It is what finally pushed me "over the edge" of exploring other methods of getting food from the sea. Last Wednesday, after posting my reply (above), I went to the local fishing store and bought two hoop-nets, accessories, and a lobster report card. Got it all rigged up on Thanksgiving and was planning on going to Anacapa island to drop them for some lobster and fish while they soak. Unfortunately, the forecast called for 3 to 5's, so I decided to skip the channel crossing and went eight miles up the coast to the kelp patties off Rincon beach (north Ventura). The fishing was not that great - a tiny rockfish, little leopard shark, and a jacksmelt. I did however catch about ten crabs. I kept five legal sized ones - four rock crabs (>4 inches across) and one big dungeness crab (>6.5 inches). I enjoyed the experience and look forward to doing it again. Again, thank you Tony! |

Glad you got 'em out there, andrey, and thanks for the nice words. BTW, in my far-distant youth I used to surf Rincon, my second-best favorite break on the S. California coast after Trestles. Best for the holidaze to all, Tony |
