That is silly fast for a sail boat! Seeing their boat in the video...it really doesn't look like it should go that fast at all! The sail is much smaller than I expected. I would love to see the principles that make it work explained in layman's terms. :) |

Did a little poking around and found a video of the same boat taking flight and crashing spectacularly at 53 kts. Just shows what a fine run deal this is, literally a breath away from losing it the whole time. Makes it even more amazing IMHO |

Look at his tell tail, he is generating his own apparent wind, like ice yatchs! |

As sailors know, the apparent wind is the combination of the actual wind and the boat wind. At a speed of 60-MPH, as this boat is doing, the boat wind moves the apparent wind forward to close hulled sailing, just like an ice boat. The boat appears to be very close winded, as the apparent wind angle looks like the boat is only sailing about 5-degrees off the wind. That in itself is amazing. |

Sailrocket 2 has claimed to have reached over 68 MPH on the 500 meter course on November 16th. Here is an excellent video about the kiteboarders' quest for the speed record, but includes very good footage of Sailrocket 2 as well: http://www.nytimes.com/video/2012/11/23/sports/100000001895658/ kite-with-the-wind.html |

After watching the blowover video, I think they should rebuild the cockpit to resemble a typical tunnel hull closed canopy outboard race boat. Sixty mph is fast enough to kill you in that type of crash. With an enclosed canopy and the driver breathing scuba air, there is less chance of getting knocked out and drowned. rich |

Another update, they ran again today and clocked it at 121km/h: 75 mph! Good lord! http://www.gizmag.com/ new-world-speed-sailing-record-6537kts-75mph-121kmh/25065/ |

The maximum speed recorded over one-second was in excess of 78 MPH! The boat is of a very interesting design. The "pod" is set so it appears to crab sideway relative to direction of travel so it aligns with the apparent wind for reduced drag. http://www.sailrocket.com/node/287 Cavitation is a problem for this boat just as it is for powerboat propellers: |
