I am looking at a 1991 Outrage 17 with an asking price $8,500, a nice trailer, and a 1991 Mercury 115-HP outboard engine. I have an OUTRAGE 18and a 16-footer. I have never ridden in the Outrage 17. Literature from 1991 says this boat can go fish with the big boys. I am assuming this means it has some offshore capabilities. The brochure also says less swamped capacity and 3-inch more draft than 18-footer. How is this boat in real life? Is this [price] reasonable? Peace and Merry Christmas. |

I owned a 1991 Outrage 17 for 7 years and am fluent on this model. While not as popular as the Montauk 17 or Outrage 18, it is a fantastic model. The Outrage 17 handles much, much better than a Montauk 17. It is slightly wider and has some great features that mean a lot. When conditions lead a Montauk to spank, the Outrage 17 lands with a slight bounce, due to the true V hull. In 2' waves my Montauk rode better by slowing down. In an Outrage 17, I found the ride improved going faster. This took some time to get used to. -true V hull for offshore While the Outrage 18 is a bit wider and has a bit more lateral stability at rest, the rear storage, electronics box, and taller windshield make it superior. I upgraded to a Outrage 17 from a Montauk 17 since I frequented waters that were very snotty, boat wakes and SCA conditions. I sold my boat due to lack of use (head banging on keyboard) Photos: Price is reasonable assuming boat, motor and engine are in good shape. Do a search (under NEW TOPIC) for Outrage 17 and you can read more. |

What he said! I really think it was the best of both worlds between a Montauk and an Outrage 18: the ride, taller console, added storage, stern seats and internal fuel tank of the Outrage yet with the light weight, ease of trailering and fuel efficiency of the Montauk! http://www.whalercentral.com/infusions/personal_page/view_personal_page. php?user_id=25598 |

Mike, I owned a 91 outrage 17 until this past fall. Sold it and then got into one of the bigger Montauks. It was a great boat and I would agree with everything the previous poster wrote. Although I never ran it way offshore, I used in Long Island Sound a lot and had no problems except on the real dicey days (which I usually stayed in on). The boat ran beautifully. The price sounds fair since I sold mine for about the same amount and the boat/engine/trailer sounds comparable. I would be careful with the interior gas tank. Mine failed in recent years and that was a problem. You should check to see the condition of yours. Good Luck. AK |

I'll just confirm what everyone else has been saying about that boat, it's the best of both worlds. After having a 1989 Newtauk (my own conversion) for several years, I moved up to a 1991 17' Outrage and it's been a great choice for what I do. Ample seating, easy to tow and work on. I'd highly recommend it to someone who's looking for that size boat. I was thinking about upgrading to the 18' Outrage but after looking at a few, I couldn't justify the $$ I'd be spending, they were that close. As for the price, I'd say it's in the right ball park, I'm planning to upgrade to something in the 20' class this spring and I'd be looking to get $9K for mine, with a 1991 120hp Johnson, 2004 Loadrite Trailer, and that would also include a 2005 5hp kicker with about 5 hours on it. Good luck! Dave |

The draft is not 3 more inch. I know it's written on this site "Reference" section that it's 13" but everywhere else, including in the BW 1991 catalog, it's stated 10". http://www.myfishingpictures.com/data/500/BW_1991_Catalog.jpeg |

Did you buy the Outrage 17? We have a 95 and it is terrific. I've never heard a bad review, had ours going on four years we're right next to Lake Michigan and out there all the time. Phil is exactly right about how going Faster makes for smoother ride in nasty stuff and getting it tweaked or Dialed in is kinda strange. Price seems right I'd be going for it if you havent |
