Remember when you were full of adventure? I've never gone this far but my brother and I took a trip on the Intracoastal waterway from Houston Tx to Corpus Christie in the 60's. This was in his 17 Montauk. We thought we would catch our dinner along the way. We were both happy that we took bolongna for breakfast. http://onlyinamerica-web.sharepoint.com/Pages/BuytheBooks.aspx

Come on, it's the middle of winter, I'm going to need some details, please.

I just mapped that out, about 200 miles+/-, did you do it all in one day? Was it a round trip or one way?

Sounds like a fun book.

Recently, I've had some crazy thoughts of taking my Montauk on Whaler's Bimini trip in June. Have to take a few extra cans of gas, but as long as I was with the rest of the convoy and seas were calm.....

Moose, I remember we took a week to make this trip. Going south on the ICW took 3 or 4 days since the idea my brother and I had was to camp and fish along the way.

We had slept on the boat before but this was 6 nights and we always took stuff that we didn't need. A lot of the fun was setting all the gear out on the garage floor in the planning stage. Amazing what can be packed on a 17 foot boat.

For some reason we forgot how bad the mosquitoes and other flying insects were. Maybe we were just caught up in the excitment. We pretty much slept under towels in the back slews off the ICW. I remember the barge traffic sucking the water out of the slew and leaving us high and dry until the barge passed and the water flowed back in. This was something we endured the whole week. That part of the ICW is cut through low land covered with swamp grass and small creeks. You can see for miles in all directions.

The fishing was only fair as you can expect when you must catch some for dinner. Murphy's law was and is alive.

I think we ran out of beer before we were getting close to running out of gas. We knew the area fairly well so the small marinas and coastal towns were our targets each day.

The trip back was zooom and go. The Montauk had a Johnson 85 stinger and was fast on the straight and narrow ICW. Not much problem with bugs on the return trip. I think we smelled so bad we didn't need mosquito spray. We had Ivory soap which made suds in saltwater but it's difficult to bath with crabs nibbling at your extremities.

Shucks, we were boys on an adventure, we swapped ends on the boat when we needed space.

All ended well and we have the memories.

Made many a carefree overnight canoe trip down the Delaware River in the late 1970's. Get dropped off at put-in with just a case of beer, pack of hot dogs and rolls and a box of Cheez-It crackers and sleeping bags. We would fish and paddle, set up a camp wherever we wanted. No tent, just slept under the stars near a nice big campfire. Next day paddle to our car waiting at take out. No cellphones, no first aid kits. We somehow survived...

I sympathize with flawed memory of details, but I gotta pick a nit.

Either your trip was in the mid 70s or the boat was some other model. I don't recall a Montauk model until about 1973.

I did a Whaler Fleet Bimini voyage from Miami in the early 80s in my '66 Sakonnet and later in my Outrage 18. It was an adventure to tell my grandbuddies. I don't recommend it for feeble oldsters.

Red sky at night. . .

I went from Southampton to Block Island in my 13 SourPuss with 50 Merc when I was in college in the 70s. Yeah, case of beer, bag of pretzels and of course no phone, no compass and lots of fog.....barely made it.

Later I had the idea of trailering to Miami or Key West and zipping over to the Bahamas. Hey, couldn't take long cruising at 35. Never happened......probably good thing.

Your correct JB, that trip was in the mid 70's. The mind is a good thing when it works.

I had the great pleasure of joining the OIA tour in 2011. For one week I had the awesome experience of coastal cruising in an 18' outrage, courtesy of Dr Tom. The leg I was on stretched from Philly down the Delaware around NJ and up into New York Harbor. Had my obligatory picture taken in front of Lady Liberty! A great experience and qualified for the check off of the old bucket list! Thanks guys!
