I have a 13 sport that I'm nearly finished restoring. I purchased a used steering system (with pulleys) to replace the one that did not come with the boat. I see posts that suggest early 13s did not have pulleys at the engine - and only the 3 at the corners of the boat.

Which is the right way to go on this boat? I have 5 available - so I could do it, but Tom C posted an article a couple of years ago that suggested that Whaler recommends NOT using pulleys at the engine (it slows down steering response).

What would you do - and do you have pictures of your set up? I've searched the site and looked at existing pix (where links still work), but am not clear on how to proceed.

The 13' sport that I grew up with,1969 model, had just the three pulley's. Two on the Starboard and one on the port, also had a tensioner spring on the Starboard side near the engine hook-up. Engine was a Johnson 40hp Electamatic. I have seen two additional pulleys at the engine and woundered about the same thing Tom was saying.

I can't say if this is correct, but this is how mine is set up.

I removed the port tensioner per Binksters recommendation. Steering is plenty responsive.
