I'm restoring a 1985 15 Whaler I purchased from the government. It was assigned to a Fire Dept according to the faded name painted on the side. The USCG Capacity plate is missing...it either was removed or the boat didn't come with one (unlikely, perhaps). Where can I get one? Thanks |

I had Janis at Magic brush make a perfect metallic decal that I put on the old faded plate and then re-riveted back on. It looks perfect. |

I wrote to Chuck Bennett, who replied and recommended a place to get my replacement plate. Thanks to all here, and to Mr. Bennett. |

I wonder if the CG would notice a decal raising my max HP from 600 to 700 LOL! Wouldn't twin 350s look sexy some day when it's time to repower? |

If your boat is over 20 feet, the plate is voluntary. And no, they really won't notice (or care). I've been boarded 6 or 8 times, and they have never looked at my capacity plate. And even if they did, there is no reference book showing what the capacities were. In fact, whaler has changed them over the years on the exact same model, so even that isn't consistent. |

Plotman you might be right as to them not looking but they would have if they did a VE and yes it is for reference only and voluntary on larger boats but there still is a formula to determine capacities and as an official agent(cy) they can issue citations/arrest etc. so it is up to the officer to determine what is safe to operate the vessel it is all discretionary. (like a cop saying you are going to fast for the road conditions even though you are driving below the posted limit) Hence watch out what you put on a plate. |
