I just purchased my second Whaler, the first being a 13 sport many, many, many years ago. It is a 2004 19 Justice with a Mercury-branded [Yamaha] 225-HP four-stroke-cycle outboard engine. I paid $16,200 for the boat, motor and aluminum tandem axle trailer. The seller is also recovering the interior cushions and T-top at his upholstery shop. The hull appears to be rock solid, no hollow sounds when hit with a rubber mallet. The motor, has 216 hours, 75-percent at idle. While the hull is solid today, [are there] any [problems] I should be aware of with this model and year? Any idea of the value of the entire package? The motor runs strong, with a slight hesitation at 2,000-RPM. I am told by a mechanic friend that this is more than likely [due to] dirt in the fuel rail and an easy fix. Please any thoughts, criticisms, or ideas are appreciated.

I am not aware of any particularly well-known problems with any Boston Whaler boats that can be reduced to a certain model and year with regard to the hull construction developing problems with age, and, accordingly, I don't recall anything particular about 2004 or the 19-foot JUSTICE. However, the Mercury-branded Yamaha 225-HP Four-stroke-cycle engines of that era are now becoming known for having a bit of problem with corrosion in the exhaust system. Since you have a JUSTICE model, the hull is built with a heavier laminate schedule, and it will weigh more than recreational hulls of similar design. The console design and the hand rails might be configured differently than on recreational models. Sounds like an awesome boat, post some pics! As far as the value of the boat, I'd say you got a great deal! |

I definitely recommend checking into the corrosion issue. Just do a google search on "Yamaha Corrosion" and you'll see a multitude of discussions and information. And although the 225hp seems to get the most press, the corrosion issues have been documented from 150hp and higher. It is a big, big problem. |
