New guy to this forum. Am considering an '83 11 footer. Boat appears sound and in good shape. It has been painted with what I believe is awlgrip. Motor is suspect('79 Johnson 25). Boat seems to have started life as a standard and then was fitted with costom console, seats and a custom aluminum 14 gal fuel tank that extends all of the eway across the boat. The console, seats and tank are all dismounted. Boat, motor and trailer asking is $1800. Don't know Whalers that well. What should I look for?

Skip, while this document I wrote up has many questions that might not pertain to an 11 it should give you a good overview of things to ask, think about, and look for. Follow the link to download the file.

I just purchased a 1978 Whaler 11' Sport for 2,000, with a 1978 Johnson 15. My boat was in almost new condition, with all the original wood and has never been painted. If the hull is in good shape and you don't mind all the add-ons it seems like an ok deal. It all depends on what you are looking for. I only wanted my 11 to have all of it's original parts. A whaler with aftermarket consoles, etc. wouldn't appeal to me as much. If you read my question a little ways down, some people gave me some very useful info. Let me know if you have any questions. The only thing that scared me about buying the whaler was the things I read on here about water in the hull. When I looked at my whaler, i picked it up to see how heavy it was to check for that. (It felt fairly light, so I think I am ok with that. The 11' whaler is a really fun boat, my friends had one that I used to go on all the time, which is why I wanted one for myself. Now that I am out of college, is the reason I bought my 11.
