Hi,

I saw this on craigs list for Long Island. I am in the market for a older whaler. This montauk looks mint and has a new 90 Johnson. on it.

Can anyone comment on the price(is it worth 14k...subjective, I know)? Are Johnson's good engines?

Thanks,

Alan

Overpriced by about 3-5k. (Even with the newer motor). Too many nice montauks out there for much less.

Ditto...you can buy that engine new for about $4500. A 2009 Merc or Yamaha is only $5500.

way overpriced. 3k for hull and a generous 7k for motor is 10, not 14k.

Is that engine a rebadged Johnson 4 stroke?

Nope...a carbed 2 smoke.

wow....i thought so. Most of the time I am wrong about pricing but this one, nice as it appears, is too high priced.

How can you tell it is a 2 stroke. Are Johnson 2 strokes reliable.

Has me wondering a bit as the original cooler has been replaced and there are no back rest cushions on the fron of the console. Wonder how much was done to this Montauk.

I might go look at it and if it looks good, make an offer.

thanks for the help and let me know if you see anything else suspicious or not warranting such a high price.

The ad says make an offer, so make an offer. The boat looks clean, the motor is advertised as new, so it's just about the price. Cushions and coolers were all options, so there's nothing unusual about that. All of that can be purchased from OEM suppliers, it's just a matter of money. If you do offer on the boat, do it with cash in hand so the seller knows you are serious. I suspect the seller has priced it to see what he can get, and in light of the price of a new Montauk 170, probably thinks it's priced right. Only the buyer and seller know for sure...

Sal -- That motor is the same as the 1995 Ocean Pro only its 9 model years newer. They redesigned the cowl and the lower pans to give it a more rounded look around 2001.

Peter, I ended up buying a different Montauk today, fyi. Thanks for responding to my post before. And Montaukman, if you have not looked at the $7,000 Montauk in Westerly, RI, you had better move quick.
