I have a 1961 sport 13 for sale. This is a project boat and will need a salvage title. Here is the story lol. I bought and registered this boat about 15 yrs ago. I gave it to a good friend for his camp and he registered it in his name. He has since passed away and I now have a boat and trailer with no paperwork. This boat is not stolen and this is not a scam. This boat needs fiberglass work, in and out. It has all of the wood except the bow hatch cover. I have the original 1963 Merc 35 that came on the boat but it also needs work. Make me an offer if interested. I have the twin to this boat that I am restoring now. I will help and do whatever I can to get paperwork for whoever ends up with it. It needs a good home and some attention. Located in Sunset Beach NC, lower east coast 5 miles above the SC border.

They did not have titles for boats back then. This would be REAL easy to get one. Just write out a bill of sale with HIN# on it and it should be no problem for the buyer. Do it for yourself and get a title as well.

Thank you for the response. I guess I am slow and maybe you could help me out. This boat was last registered in NY many years ago to my friend. I believe upon his passing that his wife had the registration transfered to her name. I have no idea where she lives now BUT I have the boat. I know in NC they do not title boats under 14 feet. I mentioned salvage title because I thought that was what it was going to take to get some clean paper on this boat for transfer purposes. Any help you wish to give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. jon

Again just give the person a bill of sale and they should have no problem getting it titled in their state. Do you have any registration?

For reference-

you would NOT be able to register this boat in RI with only a bill of sale.

I had a 13 whaler I purchased from a gent and all he gave me was a notarized bill of sale I was unable to do squat with it and wound up giving the boat away.

Although they did not have titles back then and some states still do not have titles now for smaller boats or at all. They did have registrations and an old copy would suffice as proof of ownership.

Other states may vary but you would be SOL in RI.

Hence why I asked about registration, no matter who's name it is in.

Nope .... no paperwork of any kind and that seems to be the issue lol. Thanks for your assistance. Anyone have a 13 footer registration and no boat to go with it ? lol I promise this is not a stolen boat, I am too old for that trick ... hate to junk the hull but may have to. Thanks again... jon

I tried to register a `59 Sea Fury, a few months ago in Fl. This boat had no history at all, not even numbers on the hull. The owner said he had owned the boat for 17 years, but never had time to restore it. He is a boat dealer. All I had was the bill of sale. There are no HIN numbers on the hull, as this was not required in `59, although some builders like Whaler did use HIN numbers. I was told at the Title office to have the seller state that he was the owner for 17 years, and get the sellers signature notarized, and they will title and register the boat. I have done this, but I haven`t been back to the title office yet, Do you think they will register and title it?

Would like to see the 13 foot Whaler if still avalable. I will be in Cherry Grove off and on throughout the summer. I presently have a 1993 Montauk but will be down sizing in the next year or so. Let me have a telephone number. Tom.
