Looking at a 1989 18ft outrage with Yamaha 150. Boat appears in good shape. Any ideas on what the price should be? Special things to look for?

What are they asking for it?

If it's the original motor, not repowered, everything pretty clean, well maintained, ok trailer, 8-10K -- can't really begin to guess without more details and photos. This is such an open ended question -- search this site for info.

If the motor is an original 1989 150, ask for proof that the shift shaft has been replaced otherwise put the value of the motor at ZERO.

The pictures speak for themselves. The boat is priced beyond it's market value.

Here is a link to a page I created on searching for whalers. At the bottom of the page is a PDF check list you can download and use for surveying a used Whaler. It has all of the main things to look for and inspect pretty well covered.

Can you share more information about the shift shaft? Is this the linkage from the control to the motor? Is it and internal part on the motor?

Thanks

The shift shaft of V6 Yamaha outboards of the late 1980s vintage was not made out of stainless steel. The shift shaft runs in the leg of the motor between the gearcase and the powerhead. As these motors aged they experienced shift shaft corrosion, typically when used in saltwater, ultimately resulting in a failure of the shift shaft. When the shift shaft fails, the motor cannot be shifted into our out of gear. The repair requires removal of the powerhead and that can be a difficult task if the bolts are frozen. Given that the motor may be 20 years old now, I would count on a few frozen bolts.

If the motor was exclusively used in freshwater, it might be OK, but the motor is still not worth much being 20 years old.

Without seeing it, the boat seems priced a little high. It also doesn't have all if the instrument gages that were available ie trim indicator and it doens't have a back seat. Could be a very solid boat but I would think 10 to 12 K would be the range for a fair price for it . . and that is ensuring that the hull was dry . . . don't get me wrong 18 footers are a great boat but don't over pay for them as you need to compensate for any engine issues etc. . . .

Price seems high. Photos are too small, and not enough quantity to evaluate. Nice 18 Outrages can be hard to find -- unless you're willing to travel. Go for a test drive, look it over real good. If you decide you want the boat, offer the seller what you're willing to pay conditional on a mechanics inspection. Factor in everything that needs replacing/fixing, and everything you will want to replace. This can add up to a lot! A 12K boat can become a 20K boat in a heartbeat. A new gas tank and fuel lines can run close to 2K.

I think given the market for boats in general, as well as the time of year, $7500 sounds much more realistic than $15000. Up until a certain date, somewhere around the year of this motor, Yamaha was using standard steel for their shift shafts, which over time have rusted into the fittings, making them just about impossible to remove.

Jeff,
Your site is great.
Those Whaler search links you created to the various sites are awesome!

I noticed for the description of one of the sites, you stated:

quote:
"For some reason Texas has a lot of nice Whalers and a lot without bottom paint. Why? I do not know."

That's just how we roll........:-)

15K definitely sounds high -- particularly with bottom paint and if it is a saltwater motor.

On the other hand, $7500 is equally low. You are probably somewhere in the 9-12 range if the motor is in good working order, the teak is in good working order and if the gelcoat is without may cracks.

To fetch 15K, you should expect a boat of that vintage to be pretty much bristol.

A number of very good 18' Outrages have sold for $10,000 or less, over the last couple of months. This boat does not appear to be nearly as clean as those boats, with virgin bottoms, great teak and gelcoat, ect.
