For sale: 1992 bare hull, formerly a Montauk. http://home.comcast.net/~tomwclark/1992_Montauk_066.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~tomwclark/1992_Montauk_059.jpg Topsides of the hull have just been painted with Awlgrip. Interior is original gel coat and in very good shape. Side rails, bow rail, navigation lights and bow, stern and lifting eyes are all original. New Barbour rub rail has just been installed (though the second photo shows it before completion). The bottom has a fresh coat of ablative blue bottom paint. $3000, located on Cape Cod. |

Is there a trailer with the boat? |

I have taken the time to look at this very appealing Whaler project offered from the West Coast. It is a clean hull very affordably priced for the Montauk oriented person. No need to discard an older power as it has been already done. This one is sure to be snapped up quickly. |

To clarify: There is no trailer. There is no motor. There is no console. There is no seating. If you look at the photos, what you see is what you get. Cape Cod is a very large sand spit extending from the coast of Massachusetts into the Atlantic ocean. As I have said, the boat is on Cape Cod (specifically in Dennis). It is not on the West Coast. |

Great description; is I had some extra cash, I'd jump on it; hard to find one that looks that good for that kind of $$; bet it won't last long! thanks, Tom for posting it. Chuck |

This would be a project boat that I would consider looking at. The Eastern coast Whaler Refit Mongers will be keen to check this one out. If it was close enough; I most definitely would take a day trip to check it out..And enjoy visiting Cape Cod. |

Tom, Any idea of the history of this boat? Why the topsides were painted and fresh bottom paint added? |

Yes, I do know the history of this hull. It belongs to my brother-in-law, Tom Olsen. It belonged to the Dennis Yacht Club, which Tom is deeply involved in. He traded the club a RIB for this boat; the RIB better suited their needs. The hull had some chine damage which Tom repaired (he is a professional boat builder and owner of Olsen Marine in Dennis). He chose to Awlgrip the topsides instead of tying to match & patch the gel coat. He may have had the paint leftover, but that's speculation. I have personally seen this boat when I was back on the Cape in July. It is not waterlogged. The interior gel coat is all original and the only screw holes in it are the ones the factory made when finishing the hull as a Montauk in 1992. The console and seat wound up in yet another 16'-7" Whaler hull that Olsen Marine owns. The blue bottom paint is a renewal of the paint the hull has always had. The blue color is unfortunate, in my opinion, but there it is. A much better choice of bottom paint color is white paint tinted to match the hull. When I was there this summer, they had acquired their 21' Rib Side Outrage which also had blue bottom paint, I made the suggestion to get rid of it and paint with color matched bottom paint. I think this bottom paint looks much better: http://home.comcast.net/~tomwclark/RibSideBottomPaint.jpg If you want to gauge the quality of the work Tom does, visit his web site and look at the photos he has there, but bear in mind his boat building/repairing skills far exceed his web site creation skills ;-) |

Hang a 60 or 70 h.p. E-TEC with tiller steering on the transom and that boat would make the ultimate Cape Cod fly fishing machine. Look at all that real estate with the furniture removed! |

Tom, a while back, you had a post regarding mixing bottom paint with tint to get a color match for desert tan. I've done a search but can't find it. Can you provide the details on what you did? Not to hijack your thread, sorry. |

Here is Tom's paint process. http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/015309.html I have a local marine paint shop here in Detroit that has the desert tan mixture code on file from my paint I had made. They will mix the color in any number of bottom paints with out any hassel. I just do not know about shipping. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v427/jeff_rohlfing/Bottom%20Paint/ |

The boat Tom refers to is not desert tan it is outrage grey or basically eggshell white. I wonder how close Petits Vivid white is to the outrage grey? I know years ago I hit a rock on my 81 and we repaired it with epoxy. I then used Petit topside in an off white or buff color(don't remember as I was 13 or so) and it was a dead match. When I get a wild hair or run out of navy I am going to go with the white. I will let you know in 2016 or so. |

Jeff, thanks for the links. My little Katama sits in the water sometimes and the algae grows quickly. I'm going to try the tinted bottom paint with a barrier coat next spring. As you've seen from the photo I sent you, the hull on my boat is pretty nice for being 34 years old, I want to keep it so. |
