I'm looking at a 2008 255 Conquest with a 300 hp Verado with about 100 hours, still under warranty. Although I own two Whalers (a 130 Sport, and a 1996 Outrage 19), I've never bought a used one.

I thought the Conquest might be a more comfortable boat for my wife and six year old daughter for our day jaunts to the surrounding islands near my hometown of Savannah, Georgia. I would keep the 130 Sport, and sell the Outrage if I get the Conquest.

Apologies if these questions seem naive or obvious, but here goes:

1) If the Conquest I'm looking at is being sold by the dealer that originally sold and serviced the boat, would it be wise (or even necessary) to have a marine surveyor look at the boat first?

2) What's the best resource to determine the value of a used boat so I'll know that I'm not overpaying?

Thanks as always for the collective wisdom of this forum and your generosity in sharing your knowledge.

1) Yes imo get it looked at. A used car/boat salesman are salesman good and bad and many times boats come in on trades they know almost nothing about other than they want to sell them. In fact if there are problems I don't think they really want to know about them anyways. It translates to less money on commission or no sale at all. Its your responsibility to check it out and ensure it truly is what they are advertising and best to get a third party in there to inspect it. A 255 is a bigger boat more complex when it comes to wiring electronics haul structure and engine issues so best to get it looked at to be safe.

2) Cragislist, Boat trader, CW members Market Place are all great indications of what is the value. Where I live BW's are just overpriced in general so our local craigslist will be too high but in most cases an average of different states should give you a clear idea. Some models really are worth more due to its condition what parts have been updated and how rare the model is much like a classic car but the 255 is a newer model should be quite consistent in what the value is.
