Folks, my 15 yr old is ready to branch off and do some of his own boating (not with mom and dad on 23'). I have found a 1969 hull, had a 1972 50 johnson which I threw away yesterday. For now i'm going with tiller set up but need an interior. I have seen Nautical lumber and Superior builders, and both are rather expensive. So I ask does anyone have in fair condition an interior for tiller setup, or recommend another outfit.

Actually, if you bought the mahogany by the board foot from a lumber yard, you'd probably pay more than Nautical Lumber or Specialty Marine want for theirs. The finish on their products is very nice as well. I have a 13' standard with tiller steering. My wood came from Specialty Marine. You can see some pictures of my boat here:

I have the same project going forward on my sons 72' 13.

Is there another option on wood besides mahogany which
would look acceptable and weather the elements ?

I have seen some whalers on the cape redo seats with
White Pine. Even when sealed they seam to stain quickly.
I dont know if a tighter gain is required. I would
appreciate somebodys advise.

csj,
If your 13 hull is decent, solid, not painted inside etc.....P-L-E-A-S-E don't use white pine!!!
Spend the money for a new mahogany interior from Nautical Lumber.
Trust me, you'll get your money back when you sell or trade.

I have the interior from a 1973 Sport. It includes the console, risers (seat clamps), and front hatch cover (everything except the two seats). I will post pictures after I apply a couple more coats of varnish. The parts are in very good shape. Extraneous screw holes were plugged with mahogany bungs. These parts might provide an inexpensive alternative to new wood and still keep the classic look of your boat.

I sold my Ok interior for $150 off my 1981 13'. Honestly I would pay the $$ for a new one unless your boat is a work in progress....or a mess. I think my new interior was around $500 delivered.

Bob, the whaler is fairly rough so I would prefer to keep it functional for my son and cheaper. Please advise if you have pics and a price. Chris 410-804-0697 Maryland

Thanks for the interest. I should have pictures to post by early next week. Just need a couple more coats of Epifanes varnish and a sunny day to take some pictures. I didn’t use the parts primarily because I wanted an enlarged console so I could have a spot for a fuse panel. When I finally got around to refinishing the older parts I realized the quality of the wood Boston Whaler used back in 1973. The seat clamps (risers), are quarter-sawn mahogany. Sawing the wood in that way is expensive and highlights the beauty of the wood in a very special way. Quarter-sawing any wood is usually reserved just for high-end furniture. These are pretty amazing boats we have. I’m hoping someone will use the extra interior pieces I have.
