It's on a 16 BAJA I bought but I don't need this much power. It went 88 on gps and had more left before I chickened out. The guy I got it from said it had gone mid 90s. All I want to do is put a 115 Yamaha on it and go low 60s. Anyway, the motor seems to be a 84 200 by the tag but the serial number on the block indicates that the powerhead is a 225. It has a Bob's nosecone and low water pickup, cooling modsand some other mods that I didn't get filled in on. Supposedly putting out 235-240 hp. Less than 30 hours on the performance rebuild. Has 28 in pitch Quicksilver chopper over the hub prop. The guy I got it from said it was $2,500 in rebuild costs. Very clean motor used only to terrorize boaters FRESHWATER lake in Maine. Bruce |

Do you have documentation (reciepts) for the rebuild? $2500 seems low for a new performance powerhead. What is the shaft length? Im 3000 miles from Maine but I will vouch, there are several versions of big block Mercs buld in the 80's and this 200 might be the bad ass. Seems to me this engine only weighs 389 lbs. If info shakes out, $2k is a bargain. Good luck to both sides. |

It sounds like it might be one of those racing powerheads, called a "2.4 liter Bridgeport" http://www.nymarine.ca/ME2-4LRACERWEBPIC.gif Those things would turn 7500 RPM and put out more like 240HP. But they didn't have a long life! Mean sounding machines however. |

Try Scream & Fly. 115 might fetch low 60's maybe high 50's. 16 Checkmate with a 140 looper swinging a 24" Raker did about 65. |

Yes it's a 2.4. What's a Bridgeport? It's 20 in shaft and using a CMC power jackplate. I bought the whole rig from the friend of a medical marijuana dealer in Maine who owned it and dumped money in it but then got into hot water and had to sell it quick. Work was done by a Mercury racer that works out of his house up there. That's all I have. Wish I had documentation..... |

Bridgeport was a model like "offshore" but high performance and I believe it had to do with the heads. It was carbed and replaced in early 90's with the 2.5EFI race engine. They screamed like LHG noted. If this is only running normal RPM's then it is just a modded 2.4. |

I'd say not Bridgeport. Can't see that it could run alot of rpms with that 28P prop. But, I haven't had it out yet. LOTS of debris in Chesapeake Bay now. Whole pilings, stumps, barrels, oil tanks, even cows though I haven't seen any. Wouldn't want to hit something at 90 mph in a 16 ft boat with no kill switch..... |

Good call in not going out. Hitting a cow at 90 miles per hour in anything would be a bad thing. |

Start it up and see what it sounds like. If it's a Bridgeport racing powerhead, you'll know right away. They had a sound unique to the world of outboarding, akin to a Chevy 409 with solid lifters and high lift cams. If it's not a Bridgeport, it could simply be a souped up 200. There are a lot of aftermarket performance components for the Merc V-6's. The place to sell that engine is screamandfly.com. If it's in great shape, and with a Sportmaster lower unit, I would guess this performance engine could be worth more like 3-4K. It sounds like that Baja should have a classic Merc in-line 6 tower rather than one of those squat and boring Yamaha 115's! |

Seems to me it is setup pretty good as-is. The 16' Baja has not been made in decades. One of those era correct towers from that dude in WI would be bitchin...$4k? |

Yeah, I sold my 16 Allison with tower on it and the next day bought this thing. Money didn't even make it to the bank. I love the Mercs but the Yams run well. I did notice that Merc parts are alot cheaper than Yamaha but it seems Yamahas hold up better.... |

The performance and generic boats Ive played with, 45 mph is the perfect speed for cruising. Inboard props, jets, I/Os and outboards. Every engine has it's sweet spot and it sounds like your merc is going to run you all over the place, 45 mph with very little effort. With 65 mph potential, 45 is a safe speed, easy on the engine and fuel, just keep your foot out of it. Nothing is more fun than to be cruising along in your 45 mph sweet spot (65 wot) and some dude passes you doing 50...revenge is so sweet. At the very least, consider the Merc consumable, run it til it drops, THEN hang your Yam on the back. Bet you are going to miss the power. good luck |

This thing is way beyond 65 WOT and 45 cruise. It has gone 88 mph GPS with more left. Imagine chinewalking at 90.....eeeeek! It could cruise all day at 65. I like overpowered but this is nuts. The boat is only rated for 120 and it's got almost double that. |

if not a racing Bridgeport, in 1980 and 1981 only, Mercury made a 2.4 liter V-6 225. You must have one of those, even if the decals have been altered. http://www.nymarine.ca/80ME225WEBPIC.gif You can check the serial number here |

The serial number on the block is 5976980. It comes up as 225, I think it was 1982. Ran it friday and only got up to upper 70s before I ran out of creek. I was still playing with the jack plate and trim controls. I doubt this thing ever went 90 mph. There was definitely some left and boat was stable no chinewalk but I don't think it was fully up and on the pad yet. Luckily I did't hit anything at speed. Still debris out there (Chesapeake Bay). Hit something while planing off. Sounded awful and pulled the boat out. No apparent damage. Waterlogged branch I suppose. Anyway, I'll be putting it on Craigslist or EBAY soon but offering here at $2,500. People have told me it could be worth $3,500 but I not sure of that. Even though it's fresh block it's a 25 + yr old motor. Only thing I can think that it might need is trim seal. I bleeds down some and seep a little. But doesn't affect operation. |
