I am searching for the right fuel tank(s) to put beneath the RPS on my 1986 Montauk. One tank? Two Tanks? size? Plastic? Anyone have anything for sale? Best place to buy online? Eric

Eric: This question has been asked here many times here on this site. And you are going to get multi. answers on this topic, the right answer is the one your are going to be happy with. I can give you my thoughts on the fuel tank subject, but like a horse I can only lead you to water.
The best fuel tank (What I think) is to have a custom fuel tank built out of .125 aluminum. The tank is better than plastic and will stand up better to the elements. It will hold any type of fuel without a problem. You can have your fittings placed anywhere on the tank, you can have a manual gauge or an electric one, your fill can be threaded or barbed. You can have any dimensions you want, and any shape you want, only limited to your own thoughts. After your tank is built you can have it painted/powered coated(any color) or just left in the natural state. I have 2 whalers both have custom fuel tanks and the cost (from my welder) beats the price of a plastic tank. I would also put/build the largest tank you can fit under your seat (just because it is large does not mean you have to fill it all the time but its better to have the capacity and not use it then need it and not have it). I'm sure where you live (SC) you can find a welder that does aluminum. Trust me do it right once and never have to worry about it again...

Eric: Forgot, if you go with an alum. tank do not forget to give yourself some space on the bottom for a floor mat. I used dri deck that way not water can sit under the tank and it cushions the tank as well...Happy new year

I replaced my Pate fiberglass tank with two 12-gallon Mirax aluminum tanks.
You may search and find various comments on the Mirax tanks here on continuouswave (as well as discussion about ethanol deteriorating fiberglass tanks).

Somewhere on either continuouswave or other forums, I followed the advice to leave them unpainted (although powder-coating is an option); the advice was that the paint would not hold up forever.
You can see this page and click on Tanks, then Rectangular:

I chose two D-1212 tanks with handles and the mirrored fittings.

I'd go with the 24 gallon Moeller 031626. Made for Montauk RPS. Fills from back without moving tank.
Best one I've seen yet.
We got ours from discountmarinesupplies.com for about $230.00 including shipping.

Forget Moeller, There was a long thread on this tank in the general section. Moeller just does not 'get it" Why bother screwing around with cutting your floor mats ect drilling new holes in the tunnel?, They dont drop in, Moeller listen up, We Want Drop In Tanks That Fit! Also their 10798932 12 gal plastic tank is too high too wide and too long. I second Dave Isaccs choice the 12 gal Mirax tanks D1212 and thats what I will be putting on my Whaler. I have simular ones Tempo "Long Cruise" 12 gal steel 19 L 14 W rounded bottoms that fit the 12.5 wide BW gas tank tray and their 12 H just enought to fit under the seat and no drilling holes rerouting the fuel line thru the tunnel ect. There no longer made but the D1212 is their replacement. Of course if you have double 12's and gas goes bad in one hopefully you have fresher gas in the other.

We're talking about the new, made for Montauk, Moeller part number 031626, under RPS tank.
It's the white 24 gallon tank - perfect fit and it uses the rear 3-4" of the original tunnel access hole for the fuel hose.
We used the Moeller 035710 permanent hold down kit.

The only problem Moeller had with it was some of the early one's had leaking gas caps and they covered that under warranty and fixed the new one's.
You don't need the original Boston Whaler tank mats - most are old and brittle anyway. Take 'em out. No sliding with the Moeller mounting system.
The rear fill feature of the tank is great. (no moving of the tank to fill).
I installed ours in our classic Montauk, fit perfect and it looks and works great.
And at $230.00 including shipping, it's less than 1/2 price of the two 12 gallon metal tanks. It's a lot lighter and you don't have to change tanks in the middle of your trip.

Were talking big tanks here at least 24 gal. If your looking for smaller 9 gal-6 gal tanks there are plenty of them that will work and on the cheap. Depends on a lot of things now days, especially with the cost of gas. Where is your boat stored ? in a safe spot? I did not worry about this years ago but today... Thieves love a 12 gal portable tank thats full, A 24 gal would also be a delight but if full a lot more heavy to drag out but the prize is attractive and thieves always get what they want. So your out the cost of the gas and tank if you are ripped off. Are you going to keep the tanks in the boat? Do you really need over 12 gal gas for the day. a third cheap 6 gal tank can always be stashed in the boat somewhere for a 18 gal total..The 12 gal tanks I seconded are expensive as well the 24 gal as opposed to 6 gal plastic tanks. All in all its up to what you need and can afford to lose. look up the Moeller thread about the new white 24 gal tank. It looked good but as I stated some mods needed.
