I have no relationship to this seller but this is a pretty interesting refit 25. For someone that wants a low maintenance ride this may be the ticket. $46k is a lot though

I've seen it and it's nice. Word around the campfire that it's a classic situation of "if momma ain't happy, nobody is happy." Keeping my 25 with the 300 Opti is starting to sound preferable to a new 22 Guardian - $$$.

Yeah Mark your 25 is in nice shape, I dont see you gaining much by moving to a Guardian except more room in the garage and a hole in the wallet. Your operating costs would be the same and you already have a modern outboard

The price is -OUT THERE- in this economy.
The T-Top is slanted aft/ not square to the hull & wierd.
The truck liner on top of the engine cowl.....WHAT??
The stern mounted trolling motor, odd & (hint they are
supposed to go on the bow) so you can pull the boat through the water, transfer weight forward & cast to the fish.
Overall a good deal for $ 18,000.....so you have $$ left over to fix the above items.

Some people around my area put the trolling motor on the stern and tie off to intake towers, then the trolling motor runs in reverse to keep from slamming into the tower.Stripers run around the intake towers, Im not sure about this guy, but that is one reason you see them on the stern.

I agree that there are other ways to use a trolling motor. Just that the majority of boaters use the trolling motor to access shallow areas, where the main engine running either might spook the fish, or the water depth is skinny. The added weight of angler in the stern, running the trolling motor, would not help to reduce the boats draft.
...
Although it sounds like the boat had alott of work done to it, I am allways amazed that "repair/recondition" work
doubles the perceived value of the boat by the seller.
If it was not heavily used or worn out, it would not need
all that "repair/recondition" work.
...
Replacing the worn out tires on your car, does not
*increase the value of the car by the price of the new tires* , it needed new tires to function as intended
when it was manufactured.

I agree the price is out there- I actually saw this hull in Angel's shop in Houston late last year. Excellent gelcoat work...not to keen on the rest of the refit...but you're talking $11K just in gelcoat work there...

Line-X or Rhino lining have no business anywhere near a classic Whaler.

Yeah the Rhino liner on the cowl deserves and explanation for sure.

I think its worth more than 18k, probably 25-28k. A new Guardian is 90k. Unfortunately this guy has a lot more than that into it. Not sure what prople are thinking when the pay someone to do a bunch of work and then list the bot for sale 6 months later

I would say he is into it to the tune of 50k or more. The owner might have received deals on some of this stuff, as well did some of the work, hard to say and its sort of irrelevant anyways. Perhaps its less but the rig minus the 2005 engine is compared to new. We never get what we put into it as well some us take a huge hit on taxes depending where we live as well the boat market is widely know as pretty much useless right now. All in all the vibe I get is a proud owner trying to sell a refurbished classic whaler that has been done right at least from what I can see, in a terrible market and wants pride and joy money. Probably should take 30-35 % less what has been put in and that should be the sale figure asking price. It still doesn't mean it will sell for that either. I wish him luck but it will be a challenge thats for sure. There are many who are uneasy on a boat like this that has been stripped and re gel-coated. If any of this work has been done on the cheap then the figures above will be far less.

This boat could have been a complete dog before and that is a bit of a turn off for some as well its not exactly factory spec either missing railings etc which is always something to think about when trying to get the big ticket price.

Russ 13 posted 03-26-2012 10:02 PM ET (US)     Profile for Russ 13  Send Email to Russ 13

My guess, as to why the owner is selling would be:
A) Thought they could make some $$ on the flip.
B) Recoup a larger expense than they planned for.
C) Unhappy with the finished result.
D) Know what is really under all that new gelcoat.
E) Unexpected financial difficulty.
...

I can understand the love/satisfaction of completeing a
"renovation" as I am working on one myself.
And it would be NICE if all my labor increased the value by a large amount, but that is not reality.
When I finally get it finished, my "reward" will be enjoying the boat, that works good, because it has all new
wiring, plumbing, controls......etc.

personally, i think my 25 with Whaler Drive AND twin 200's with only 240 hours on them is nicer with all the teak etc, and i paid 20k for it, with a trailer.

Good luck with the 46k

I prefer the teak models as well, but many people do prefer the maintenance free Guardian look, especially in the brutal sun of Texas.

$$$$$ wise, I think the teak classics and restored maintenance free classics have close to the same value

There is no question in my mind that buyers in Texas and Louisiana prefer starboard/aluminum to the teak. The saltwater and sun just create too much maintenance. In fact, the first thing a Texas buyer is going to do is get rid of the teak and get something else.

I guess its all about what you enjoy. I'm actually removing some of the starboard stern hatches and just spent 200 bucks on some teak to replace the the starboard with teak pieces. I also purchased some teak cooler guides, so am adding more then a few teak pieces to my 25. I have the time, am going to be retiring soon, enjoy the maintenance, but like i said, its for me, not for everyone. I love the look and get tons of compliments.
