Other than this site, where do you all look for used outboards? I'm rebuilding a 22 Guardian and need a 200+HP rig in the range of $5-$8K.
Do you have any recommendations as to prefered make/model/year etc. I'm looking for a good value for general purpose fishing.
Thank you for any advise

For 8k you should be able to get an outboard around 5-7 years old, 5k you are more like 8-9 years old.

I would suggest a 225 instead of a 200, the difference in fuel usage will be negligible and you will have about a 3-4 mph higher cruise speed.

I love my 225 and would not want any less

I know many here do not like eBay but there are a ton of outboards on there all the time.

Craigslist. I just bought a 4 stroke 20hp Honda 2008 model for $450! All it needed was the carb cleaned and a new water pump impeller and it runs and looks like new!

Guy didn't know anything about outboards and wanted it out of his garage.

I'm a bit concerned with Ebay, a few dealers seem to flood the site with motors. I'm afraid these are high mileage saltwater spoiled parts with a shinny cover. Has anyone had experience with the dealers selling out of FL?

Teak, what make is your 225? I have been out of boating for a few years and lost track of the new technology. What is the favorite brand in the 225-275 range? my application is mostly saltwater.

A few years ago, I bought a newish large outboard for my Guardian 18. A 1999 Mercury 250 EFI to be exact. I looked here, at Craigslist, The Hull Truth and Scream and Fly. I ended up buying from a guy out of Florida on Scream and Fly and it was shipped as promised and in the condition I expected from talking to the seller, overall a positive experience, and I was just running it yesterday afternoon, my third year with no problems.

Smallfrye my 225 is an older (1992) Evinrude 3.0 looper. Other than the light smoke she is a runner. You are right you definitely want a freshwater motor. A lot of people are turning in fine running older tech motors for the newer, quieter four stroke and E-tec motors. This is the segment I would target with your chosen budget.

TC you put a 250 on a Guardian 18? That thing must rip

It's fun, and a mellow cruise at low RPM's.

As a Florida resident, I would not buy a used Florida outboard. we have a 12 month boating season, and are surrounded by salt water. Even in the middle of the state, the lakes region, it is not much of a tow to the salt water and the season is the same. I have bought all of my used outboards, on EBay from sellers in the Great Lakes region. The season is short and the water is fresh. The further north the better. The last one I bought, two years ago, a 1961 Evinrude 75hp Starflite V4 only required a carburetor float to return it to perfect running condition.

One thing about shipping these outboards. Have them strapped to a pallet and wrapped in plastic. A few years ago I bought a 1958 Evinrude 35, and the seller put it into a foam box filled with styrofoam peanuts. The box was apparently dropped which broke the skeg. Fortunately it was a clamshell skeg(removable), and the seller sent my another one. Every outboard delivered by UPS or Fed Ex was delivered damaged. I have been using U-Ship with great success, no damage, and good communication. I highly recommend them.
Of course the best way to do it is to drive up there,(with a truck) check the motor out and drive it home. I think if I were spending several thousand dollars, I would do that.

I see a post from Ridge Runner for smalloutboards.com. I have dealt with this company in the past. Back in '08 I bought a NEW Mercury 25hp EFI 4 stroke from them. The owners name is Albert. Although they are not a dealer for anything or even a marina, they sell alot of outboards and are easy to deal with. From time to time he gets new motors in and sells them at reduced prices. I got a full warranty with my Mercury. He also takes trades. He is only an hour away from me (St. Pete), and has some new E-Tec 60's for sale. I am thinking of trading in my Merc for one, and will call him soon. I don't know where he gets his used motors, they might not be local. If you are interested in tha Yamaha 225, I would give Albert a call and talk to him. See if it is a fresh water engine.
