Hello! I am brand new to this forum and this is my first post.I am new to Whaler's however I am very familiar with their good name. I understand that there are a lot of fake Whalers out there, so i want to understand what it is that makes a whaler a whaler. I found a 1987 15' Whaler for a really good price with a 50HP Mariner on it. I'm going to look at it this weekend. What would you suggest that i look for to determine that it is in fact a whaler and that it is in good (normal for 25 year old boat)condition?

Are there any known problems with this years model?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome aboard - My recommendation is to dig into the reference section provided by Jim Hebert who is administrator for Continuous Wave. He also owned a Classic 15 as have many "regulars" on this site. Many owners start with Classic 13s then go to 15s, 17s and on up. There are classic and post-classic Whalers you can figure out from this site. It's pretty hard to "fake" a Whaler but many have tried to copy the design. There are specific identifiers including capacity plate and a stenciled number on the transom of every boat.

Dig through the reference docs and be sure to focus on water intrusion into hull from breaches, poor drilling when mounting equipment and damage. Bottom paint is sometimes done to hide damage but not always. The marine mahogany and teak used is of very high quality and can easily be restored if all finish is gone or faded and maintained - there is a ton of info on this subject on Continuous Wave. The outboard is always a question and should be evaluated before you purchase.

Good luck, 15s are superb boats and many are equipped with 70 HP (pretty common).

As PeteB88 said, study the pictures. Another good reference is Whaler Central:

A couple things to consider in the whole deal are the age and condition of the trailer and motor.

I have a 15' GLS with a 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha on it, and it does just fine.
