Hi All, Thanks to Jim and all for a terrifically informative site for BW newbies like me. Considering a late 80s Newport for our first boat, to be used mostly for low-key family river and inshore cruising, beach exploring and light fishing (two adults and 2 kids under 10 most of the time). The Newport has no wood, which leaves me a little cold because it just doesn't look as good as the classic Newports I've seen here. (On the other hand, I'm not that into wood maintenance.) Motor is a 2010 90 Yamaha 2-stroke. Condition of the boat appears to be average or just above; I haven't yet seen in person but it's kept in a slip (in a tidal river) and could probably use new bottom paint. Not sure what a good inspection will turn up. Given that no trailer is included and the absence of much classic teak-appeal, is the asking price of $10,000 pretty far north of realistic? I'd appreciate any thoughts regarding value (or cautionary notes) from more experienced Whaler minds! Thanks, |

Condition is EVERYTHING when it comes to a classic Whaler's Value. Model desirability is the second factor. I would post images of the boat if you could to help give us an idea of the boat's true condition. Images take a lot of the subjectivity of condition out of the discussion. For refrence, I just sold my Newport last week. The boat was a 1976 hull with a 1974 Evinrude Starflite motor. The boat was in very good condition. I sold it with all the extra parts listed for $10,000 to a buyer who know the level of quality they were buying. http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/021134.html Was my boat for everyone, no. I had lots of $9000 and $9500 offers that I turned down. I had a number that I was happy selling my Newport for and I stuck to it. Every seller has that right but, they also have to be willing to accept they might hold on to the boat for a long time before finding a buyer....if at all.

Thanks Jeff. At the risk of playing the bird-dog, I will try to post a link or two: http://images.craigslist.org/5N35Ld5J83n23If3H7c9r6794750270381619.jpg http://images.craigslist.org/5I25L35F63K43M93F4c9r2cfecf5697f114ce.jpg http://images.craigslist.org/5L75E75Jc3M13Lc3N2c9r1edcd6ecbb411512.jpg http://images.craigslist.org/5Ge5T25E73M93Id3Fcc9r04146a432b6f10d4.jpg Thanks for your help! |

A realistic price I would pay for a boat in that condition myself knowing what it would take to make it right would be in the $3500 - maybe $4500. That's is me though. |

Thanks again, Jeff. That's even lower than I thought in terms of value!! It must be in rougher shape than I'd realized. What immediate issues jump out at you from the photos? Regardless, since I'm about as handy as a migraine (which is to say, not very), I think I'll keep looking. Thanks again. |

The pictures don't show the motor very well, are you sure it's a 2010 90 HP Yamaha 2-stroke? Year built should be on the motor or you could tell by the model number code. If so and it's low hours and excellent condition, the motor, tach and controls by themselves should be worth at least $4500.00. That motor is one of the best ever made for a classic 17 Whaler hull. Very high quality, lightweight and powerful. |

What I like about that Newport is that it appears to be somewhat unmolested. It's a shame that it does appear to have been neglected though...lots of sun damage. If that 90 is truly a 2010, there is good value there from a functional perspective, but far less if one wants a stunner like Jeff's former boat. It really depends upon what a person wants out of it. |

Re-chroming parts can get expensive, pretty quickly. I clicked on the last photo only to get a quick peek. The first thing that jumped out at me was the nav light that is almost completely green...the second thing that I saw (even before the rest of the boat) was the sampson post behind the nav light....salty. There's several hundred dollars in chrome and labor right there. |

Looked at the rest of the photos...I'd say if you were going to marry that boat, $4,500 would be tops I'd offer, since you'll put in a lot of money / work. Good luck! Dave |

I would have a tough time laying out ten grand for that boat even though it seems to have a newer outboard but no trailer. Keep looking. |

Flee, I am not sure where you are located but if you near the West Coast, or willing to buy a boat from there this one is a Very Nice example of the Newport Model and fairly priced too. |

If willing to drive to FL I have a nice 19' Revenge with a 2006 Suzuki 4 stroke 115 and a 2004 trailer you can have for $10k, worth more but need to sell. It has plenty of teak for you to clean. Although much bigger inside it really is not much bigger outside and drzws nearly the same water with a MUCH better ride. For a family of 4 a Newport/Montauk will get tight. |
