We are in the market to buy one of these classic Outrage boats (circa 87-91). Yet, they seem very tough to come by vs. most other Outrages. Any ideas as to why? Was the production limited by chance, sales of boats minimal therefore few on market or folks just hang onto this model and hate parting with them?

Just curious and appreciate any insite.

Thanks

The later models with the molded full-beam splashwell dam are slightly more desireable than the older ones with the "sink" transom well. Aside from that, they are generally available throughout the year - however, you may have to TRAVEL to get the one that best suits you. I've bought boats in Texas and in Florida when I lived in Michigan...and delivered a 16'8" hull last year to a buyer in upstate NY from Alabama, and also delivered a boat from Michigan to a buyer in Texas. When I bought my 25' Outrage in Florida in 2008, I also pulled a 17' hull from Michigan to Florida for her new owner. Expect to travel, and budget accordingly.

Jay - We have been searching for many months and Craigslist, Boattrader etc.. regularly. The 22' seems much more difficult to locate vs. a 17', 18' and 20' Outrage. Our experience tells us they are not everywhere - hence my post.

Buck - Appreciate the insite. We figured as much on the travel due to the rarity of a good 22' Outrage popping up. Any idea the specific years on the molded full beam splash well?

Thanks

Grand Cayman,

I believe the 1989 modell year was the first one with the full width splash well dam. That is the model year I own.

Sorry about that - temporary brain cramp - I look at too many Boston Whaler for sale ads... In my mind it was what you wanted.

Really good, all original, non-molested Whalers 25'-17', and 1991 and older, are getting really hard to find as the years go by. Most have bottom paint or have been Awlgripped, many have poorly done homemade interior alterations and canvas, are equipped with aftermarket junk you don't want, and have bad rigging work. Then there are engines are trailers. There are a ton of these out there if that is what you want and plan on spending a fortune, either in money, time or both, to bring back and re-equip.

It appears that the REALLY NICE ones never make it to the public marketplace, but instead are sold locally to friends who have known the boat and seller for years. Yes, a nice 22 (by my standards) can still be found publically, but it is mostly dumb luck, being in the right place at the right time, and moving fast on a local find.

Spot on LHG.

Folks that think these boats are a dime a dozen are greatly mistaken.

I have two 22s. The one I may be willing to part with is a 1982, outside your defined years.. Dual trailer. 1998 Yamaha ox66 225. If you think you may have interest in that year model, say so. Then we can talk more.

22 cuddy in Annapolis looks like a very interesting boat? I wonder what
Type of range it gets with a 77 gallon tank. Also noted bottom paint. Basically brakes down to. 5000 grand for each 7 year old engine 1 grand for the trailer nd 10 for the hull.

The 22 Outrage/ guardian are readily available but tend to come in two flavors, completly rebuilt at prices from $25K to $70K and the "boneyard" hulls that need restoration and sell for $1K to $5000 totally dependent on faults. Be careful of old hulls with newer motors, its a way to overprice the hull value. They normally sell for <$20K but are all motor (over) value.
Ebay has had a few deals, based on face value but that is unusual.
I just finished a 91 Guardian for use as a basic near shore fishing boat. Its nice but not the "Bristol" finish many want. My target was a classic near shore utility boat for a value less than $15K. It's sweet, but then it a Whaler (-;
If you're interested, I'm in Austin, home of "UShip" so can get you a fair price for delivery.

The waterline on the Annapolis boat shows quite a bit of transom squat. That would need to be carefully evaluated. Price seems high.

The GA boat looks like a decent value, but why does the seller refer to the outboards as SeaDrives?

Do you think the rear waterline is low because of the weight of the engines or the wd is not giving the transom the added lift it should. Each engine probably go's 400 pounds this abou 200 over the equivalent two strokes

Ventura,
I suspect the waterline is a combination of heavy motors, and batteries located all the way aft in this boat. I would have expected better trim with the Whaler Drive flotation, but it does not appear to be the case. Wet hull? It would have to be really wet. I could be just a lousy bottom paint job too. Conventional wisdom around here says that the cuddy boats should offset this effect, with additional weight forward. This boat may also have the optional 129 gallon fuel tank, also reputed to have this effect on aft freeboard. Overall, this boat is rigged a bit heavy with a T-top and Super Console as well.

Thanks for your input. Boat is rigged heavy. Be interesting to see what it brings.

I have a 1986 22 Outrage in nice condition with the fiberglass gunnels, super console and leaning post, which offers lots of storage. It was repowered with a new 2000 Evinrude fuel injected 200 hp outboard with stainless viper prop by previous owner. It has been sitting for 2 years and will need to have the motor serviced and a new battery. Gas tank is empty. It's on a heavy duty galvanized dual axle trailer. Hull is solid with no damage, just some typical spider cracks. Has a mostly worn off old coat of bottom paint which makes it easy to inspect the bottom. I was going to have it tuned up and sell it for $12K or so but would probably sell it as is for $10K. I'm near Phila., PA. Can send some pics if you are interested.
